Based on your logic, we should probably invest most of our time evaluating 6th rounders. You can get a Tom fuging Brady there.

I mean you do project all guys, it's true, but the risk is so much higher when you are projecting someone to do something he's never done. He's strong, he's fast, he's agile. He has the tools, but can he build the house? fug if I know, if I'm a 3-4 team I draft the kid all day. We aren't that

I get there's a difference there, but 4-3 end is way closer to 3-4 OLB than 3-4 end. Thomas has not played the edge he's been covered by an OLB. Contain is a whole other animal

Which is what sets apart the good NFL talent evaluators from the rest. If you could simply take guys from the college level and have them do exactly what they did at that level in the NFL, then talent evaluation would be a helluva lot easier. There's a lot more on everyone's plate at the NFL level. DEs have to contain, DLs have to stunt, blocking schemes are more complex, TEs and RBs actually have to block, WRs have to run a full route tree, and on and on.

The guys who are elite prospects at marquee positions and have shown everything they need to do on tape are top 5 locks in every draft. They're just that few and far between.

You realize that if we applied this thought process, we certainly wouldn't have drafted Cam Newton. He'd never ran anything even remotely resembling an NFL offense when we drafted him, but we determined that he COULD do it.

He made NFL throws, we still use him out of the gun and use read option. He threw the Seam, Out, Dig. Thomas has never rushed outside shoulder on an OT in a game. I think we just have two vastly different views on this, Cam made the throws and we implemented things that he did well into our scheme. Moving to a 3-4 isn't justifiable with KK and TD as two of our best defenders.

"The throws" get all the talk, but what makes or breaks NFL QBs is the ability to read defenses. Cam had never made reads. The Auburn offense was elementary level simple. QBs that bust in the NFL are almost always guys who can "make all the throws" but they can't read a defense. The steals are usually the guys who don't have the elite physical tools but they can read a defense and know where to go with the ball and when. We thoroughly interviewed Cam and determined that he was capable of making the reads, he'd just never been asked to run that type of offense before.

You continue to focus on what Thomas hasn't done with zero thought process on what he may be capable of doing. NFL talent evaluators don't care about what Stanford asked him to do in their defensive scheme. They care about evaluating his ability to do the things that they're going to ask him to do in their scheme. This is where the drills actually do have some importance. Evaluators want to see how these guys move and that helps them determine how they translate to the NFL, especially in regards to doing things that they may not have done in college or may not have done much of in college.

I have full trust in our defensive staff. If we draft Thomas, dude's gonna be a beast. I just doubt he's actually gonna be there at #8.

Bottom Line

Basham has the strength and length to play as a 4-3 base end or as a 3-4 rush linebacker, but his pass rush approach will need to be sharpened as he lacks the flexibility to bend the edge and attack the pocket with athleticism alone. Basham may never produce a high sack total, but his alpha playing style will appeal to teams looking to groom a solid backup with starter's potential.

Based on the bottom line above, There is no way we draft a solid back up with either of our seconds or our third. This draft is too deep to be looking at backups in the early rounds when starter material is still available.

He ain't a backup, I can promise you that. Have no clue what film that guy was watching, but Basham has potential to be a force.

I hope you're right.  I like that we brought him in and our staff must want some more info.  It can be good or bad but we are doing our homework.

He's not starting over anybody we have so he's a backup rotational guy
