Report: Panthers Have Interest In McCaffery As Their 8th Pick

I can tell that there are a lot of people here that haven't seen him play other than maybe a couple of highlights on ESPN.

I understand not wanting a RB at 8 and I understand wanting more of a power runner than a multipurpose back, but anyone that thinks McCaffrey is just a scat or 3rd down back hasn't paid attention.  He can run anything any other back can run, and do it well.  He's just not a bull dozer, but he does have good lower body and core strength that allows him to break tackles and not go down easily.  Stanford ran him up the middle quite often and he was very successful there.  He's not some 175 lb. speedy guy that goes down on first contact and can only be used in space.  Yes, he's dynamic in space, but he's not limited to it.  He's about the same size as LeSean McCoy, and has the potential to be just as effective.

I've been saying all draft season that if our top guys (Thomas, Fournette, Adams, etc.) are gone, there is a very real chance he is our pick at #8.  Even if they prefer a trade down, that's easier said than done.  And if they deem him the guy they really want, they may have no choice but to bite the bullet when their backs are against the wall and we're on the clock.

As long as

1) Fournette is gone

2) Trade down to 15-20 and get another 2nd out of it

why not

Yep that's the ideal senario to pick him since there's probably a very small chance that he gets past all the playoff teams that could use an rb at the end of the 1st.

I'd be okay I guess picking him at 8, its difficult to project his NFL success but he was a world beater in college 2015 season just like Fournette was. If he busts then so be it, but it's probably worth taking the chance if the Panthers organization truly think he's a game changer . Speed , shiftiness , and versatilty in running / catching are all things this offense currently doesn't have much of .  Put him at Cams side in any shotgun formation or use him in play action or draws , if he's good the defense will have a tough time predicting what we do if the right playcalls are made.

I would rather have (not in this exact order)

1. Garret

2. Thomas

3. Adams

4. Hooker

5. LF

6. Allen

7. Howard

8. Lattimore

9. Barnett

Plus I'd love to have a shot at Obi, Ross and Njoku, along with a few others.

If taking McCaffrey at 8 means not having a shot at any of these guys then I would prefer to trade up or down. I personally don't like McCaffrey much for our offense.

I don't get it. Aren't you the guy that is always saying you don't want Fournette because we won't evolve the offense with him as the pick?

So what, now you don't want someone who would force them to do that?

I don't want a running back.

Now I would rather have McCaffrey than Fournette because I fear that Rivera/Shula want to devolve into "Ugh... we go caveman... we win superb owl... ugh" mode.  And you are correct that McCaffrey in no way shape or form would do that.

Just don't want a running back.

Top TE (Howard).  Top WR.  One of the 2 top safeties or DEs if available.  The DE/DT hybrid of Allen if he drops.

I am not going to be unhappy with either McCaffrey or Fournette though.  I just desperately want this offense to E-volve and not DE-volve.  And you're right that there's a bigger chance for that to happen with McCaffrey than Fournette.

Maybe the Panthers are trying to get an offer from Denver.  They supposedly have some interest and Elway has no problem trading up.  According to the trade chart, we could get 20, 51, and 82 for 8.  Can you imagine the fun we could have with 20, 40, 51, 64, 82 and 98 in this draft?

Team says it needs to evolve and has shown interest in player that will help them do that. Majority of huddle doesn't want him.

He's the pick.  I'm gonna enjoy it and laugh at everyone rage.
