REPORT:Panthers address its need for speed at the receiver position during the draft’s 2nd day

Even before we moved up 8 spots, I've always thought that pick(now #64) was the spot to get the WR we needed. And you should easily get one of Henderson, Taylor, Jones, or Goodwin. Would be happy with any of them.

He led the country in missed tackles.

I don't think he is quite the reach that some people think.

For those that don't want to use the link: It sounds like you just give him the ball and watch him go. Immediate help in our return game!

8. Carlos Henderson, Louisiana Tech

Probably the most exciting college tape of this receiving class belonged to Henderson. In 2016 for Louisiana Tech he forced an insane 48 missed tackles, nearly double the second-most at the position. The one thing that stands out over everything that Henderson does is his vision. Nobody in this class is better with the ball in his hands. Henderson at times looked like he was three steps ahead of the defense, making the exact right cut, hesitation, fake, etc., in order to force a missed tackle or break a small pass into a huge gain. Henderson is raw as a receiver, running very few routes for LA Tech’s offense and showing very little in terms of catching contested passes. But he is a guy you want on your team, simply to get him the ball and let him make plays. If he can develop as a receiver, he has the potential to be one of the best receivers to come out of this class.

I quite like Henderson, was targeting him in a recent mock draft in R5 but he had gone in R4

Does anyone know much about Shelton Gibson WR from West Virginia, he ran a 4.50 at the combine, but then ran a 4.39 at his pro day. His NFL Combine profile reads like this:

STRENGTHS

Flat. Out. Fast. Has run-by speed on the go routes and can create immediate separation over the top against cornerbacks who overestimate their acceleration. Saw 36 percent of his catches go for 25-plus yards over last two seasons. Ball skills and hand-eye coordination are substantially better down the field than on the short routes. Finds the deep throw quickly and makes necessary adjustments to ball flight to put himself in the best position to make the catch. Fear of his speed creates open, unchallenged throws underneath against spacious cushions. Athletic and not just a tight-hipped, straight line runner. Explosive leaper who can climb the ladder and extend way up over his head to snare the errant passes and bring them home. Has immediate gunner potential and can return kickoffs.

WEAKNESSES

Displays focus issues with his hands when working underneath. Had a case of alligator arms over the middle against Texas after taking a punishing hit a quarter earlier. Will need to learn to run more of the route tree and sharpen his skills as a route runner in general. Made a living on nine routes, posts, slants and curls. Gets to top gear quickly creating issues with excessive steps in his gear down into his breaks. Needs to do a better job of aggressively working back to the ball and scrambling with his quarterback into a catch-friendly area of the field.

SOURCES TELL US

"He will end up being one of the three fastest players at the combine. He's got ridiculous speed. He runs by people like they are standing still like DeSean Jackson used to do at Cal." - AFC South scout

NFL COMPARISON

 Corey Coleman

BOTTOM LINE

Gibson has good size and is an all-day field stretcher with blazing speed to climb over the top of cornerbacks quickly and the ball skills to finish the catch. While his hands can be a little inconsistent underneath and his routes are underdeveloped, his size-speed combination will offer a team a homerun hitter who forces defenses to keep a safety shaded his way. Gibson could be a low-volume, high-impact starter fairly early in his career.

What are your thoughts on Curtis Samuel? he seems explosive but very very raw

Interesting chess piece, athletic, but I'm not sure I trust this staff to use him correctly.  He's also so raw he will need a lot of development and that's not something we've proven the ability to do at the WR spot.

I guess I'm just referring to drafting him at 40, if we happen to keep the 40th pick, that would be one of our best chances to grab someone who's fallen out of the 1st round, which this year it could be anyone, and a very good player at that. Also the slim possibility to trade back in the second would exist. After 40, I'm game for drafting him.

I could easily see us, in typical G-man fashion, trading up into the upper 40's to mid 50's to grab "his guy". Not saying that Carlos is that guy, just that 3 top 50 picks would not surprise me.

But I like what I'm seeing / reading on Carlos.

Damn y'all, LA Tech is Conference USA. It's not a power conference by any means, but people here are acting like it's D-II. They compete for the same G5 automatic NY6 bowl bid that ECU does in the AAC.

Guess who else played at LA Tech? Our first round draft pick last year, Vernon Butler.

Yeah I just think theres no need to make a move liked that with how deep this draft is talent wise on paper.
