I'm calling it, Panthers Trade up to #2 for Fournette

In a draft this deep, I have a hard time believing we'd be this stupid.

DG just recently talked about how moving moving up 8 spots from the 3rd round to the bottom of the 2nd (for Kony Ealy) was like getting "gold".

Doing something like this is like throwing that gold in a fountain.

I hope not, but we shall see.

GODDAMMIT!

David Newton is reading the Huddle and stealing my damn material and not even giving me the courtesy of a reach-around.  :(

Trading draft picks, which Gettleman considers “gold," for the chance to pick LSU’s Leonard Fournette doesn’t make sense considering the incredible depth at running back in this draft.

I don't think we trade up, but people saying "get RB later in draft" need to realize this team hasn't done a good job at developing RB's in later rounds.  Fournette is almost a sure thing, as much as you can get.     Personally, I think there's more of a chance at hopefully getting him at #8 then DB grading to get back into the first for Howard or something like that.

Since 2009 (year after Stew and Otah picks) Carolina has drafted 4 additional RBs - Mike Goodson (2009), Kenjon Barner (2013), Tyler Gaffney (2014), and CAP (2105), with really only the last 3 being relevant.

Of those:

  • Goodson had a lot of talent but turned into a head-case.
  • Barner was drafted to be a change-of-pace and is still kicking around the league.
  • Gaffney got hurt and then sniped by BB after a Gettleman mistake. Status unclear but appears to be on his way out of the league.
  • CAP has been serviceable in his starts, though unspectacular. A career 4.0 YPC with some decent numbers in the games where he is featured. Not a star but hard to call a bust with zero potential.

I think some higher draft capital is required at the position, but not sure it's fair to say the team has failed to develop a late-rounder when Stew, Cam, and (ugh) Tolbert have clearly been options 1, 2, and 3 in this offense.

Regarding the scenario you describe, I'd be 100% on board with that and many would consider that a dream scenario.

Great Point. Have we ever drafted a truly successful running back after the 1st round?

DeShaun Foster is the only guy who comes to mind. He was picked in the 2nd round (#34). He had some great moments but never eclipsed 900 yds in a season and was somewhat injury prone. I can't think of anyone else.

It would be nice to have a back you know could consistently be a feature back for the next 5 seasons. At the end of his contract he'd be approaching his 27th b-day during the post season.

I bet this is just a strategy by the FO to curve public perception. For those who hate the idea of Fournette at pick #8, just imagine the hate of taking him at #2. Now the FO can say 'we let the draft fall into our hands' while the detractors can fallback and say 'well at least we didn't leverage our future on this guy'. Everyone wins!
