I'm calling it, Panthers Trade up to #2 for Fournette

I've been an advocate of selecting Fournette as much as anyone. But a trade like this would be insane. I want the guy, but not at a cost of two probable starters at other positions of need.

Thing is, there is no guarantee the picks we trade away will be "probable starters" or even solid contributors. Last years #2 (Bradberry) appears to be the real deal.  But, we didn't exactly strike gold in the previous 2 years with our 2nd round picks. Devon Funchess hasn't been overly impressive. We've already cut bait with Ealy.

If we signed Fournette, and exercised the 5th year option we'd have him locked up during the prime years of his career. If he came into the league and became a perennial 1,000 yd rusher, which would take the pressure off of Cam, I don't see how anyone could say "he was a wasted pick",
or "we gave up too much".

I don't think I could personally make that deal. But, I could understand why the Panthers "might be considering it". I just don't think our O-Line is good enough to consistently open holes for him. So, I might go with O.Howard. But, If we had a good/great O-Line, I could this actually being a good move.

More i think about this scenario the more im okay with it.  If we do trade up to #2 it has to be Fournette or will lose my poo.  If DG thinks and believes the hype of Fournette being a generational running back then pull the trigger!

In DG I Trust.

I could see us moving up as several teams have expressed interest in moving back to get more picks. It might not cost as much as the value charts suggest it should if we find a willing partner. Otherwise stay pat at 8 if folks want a ransom to move up.

We have no idea how things will pan out if this trade took place. But, just imagine if Fournette hit the league and was as impressive as Eric Dickerson, Emmitt Smith, AP, Bettis or even Curtis Martin were in the first 5 seasons. No way could he be considered a wasted pick. Imagine him running behind the O-Line we had during he prime years of "Double Trouble".  Unfortunately, we don't have that so that's why I'd be hesitant to try this.

I can definitely see the logic in adding O. Howard. But, I'm not sure if Shula would take advantage of his talents and actually improve the offense with another TE.

That's what I'm thinking. If we do move up it might not be as expensive as people think. Sometimes there's the mega trade ups like the two QBs last year, but there have also been trade like when the dolphins traded up for Dion Jordan and only gave a third to move up a few spots in the top ten. If we could trade up and only cost us #64 and next year's 2nd (maybe throw in our comp pick if neccessary) then it'd be worth it in my opinion.

Running backs don't win you games? Stares at 2016 Cowboys....

you know if Elliott wasn't a rookie he's the NFL MVP last year right? You know what position he plays too right? Running back.

also

Now how do you fix that?  You get a running game that doesn't use its franchise QB, who has now has had shoulder surgery, to be a main focus of the game plan. And you improve the O-Line.

Added benifit of a good running game is to keep the defense rested and off the field more often.

running backs can still win you games 2017

Even tho fornette is a solid pick we still have to fix this line..fornette will not be able to bull doze over everyone..Cam will not be a running threat...we have no receivers for defenses to have to cover..i would not trade up for him ..we need alot more pieces on the offensive side for him to be a true factor.

I like the idea of Howard, and I expect him to be there at our pick, but I just see more impact on our team if we go RB over TE, we already have Olsen, who is arguably the best TE in the game right now so TE isn't exactly top 10 pick need for us.  And WR for us may be set if KB returns to his old self.

There isn't anyone on in this draft worth a top 10 O-line pick. so If we don't go Fournette I believe we go defense.

Also the Otah, Stewart draft was awesome, we can't predict that Otah was going to be injury prone and love food more then a NFL career but the dude looked like he was going to be a all pro for the rest of his career the year we drafted him, and Stewart turned out great overall.

Btw thank you for having a thought out response

Fair points. And my comment about Otah wasn't very clear - I wasn't trying to remind that he flamed out, but was instead pointing out that the OL was bolstered at the same time as Stewart was drafted, an example of the symbiosis there. Otah flamed out spectacularly but no one can argue that he wasn't excellent, if only as as a run blocker, in 2008 and had a strong 2009 as well (the year Double Trouble both went for 1100+ yards).

Regarding TE, Olsen is getting to the point where he will soon begin to decline and having a second TE is unique in that an offense can be built to have 2 TEs on the field most of the time. Hell, Ben Hartsock was on the field for 31% of Carolina's snaps during the 2013 season and the dude didn't catch a pass all year. With someone like Howard, I envision that same type of blocking presence immediately improving the pass/run games but coupled with an actual receiving threat as well, and in a guy who appears to have the potential to ascend to TE1 status when Greg steps away. This is why I think his skillset offers almost as much, if not as much, upside as Fournette without the pricetag and with the possibility of making a larger impact right off the bat.

Again though I'm speculating as much as anyone, if not moreso. Should be an exciting draft this year.
