I'm calling it, Panthers Trade up to #2 for Fournette

The Cowboys also have the best line in the league. Cam isn't going to  just stop running because the Panthers have a new rb either. Half of his effectiveness is because of his running.

Cam basically stopped running at some point last season. Sure, he will run it sometimes, but he's not going to be anywhere near leading us in rushing. Rivera has basically told us what the deal is. Moreover, Cam needs to become more effective from the pocket, and I trust that he will. A strong running game behind an improved line will effect that. No way no one is convincing me that our O-line won't be better thus year.

I wouldn't trade up though...

Gman has shown that when a player we have a 1st Rd grade on slips into the 2nd, he is willing to go grab them. The only way we trade up in the 1st is if we truly believe we're getting a future HOFer. I would expect a very active day 2 this draft, but round one will be BPA at 8. No way we give away that much to secure a RB. . . But then again I'm on my couch. Not in the front office.

First off in case you missed it, rumor has it that the Panthers and 49'ers are in Trade Talks for #2

http://ninerswire.usatoday.com/2017/03/29/49ers-juicy-nfl-draft-trade-rumor-with-panthers-surfaces/

Now, after reading that the Panthers are very high on Fournette this year, and to quote Ron Rivera "No pick is too high for a running back".  and that the fact that feelings from Fournette are mutual with "is it possible for me to fall to the Panthers". I believe the Panthers will move up to #2 in a trade with the 49'ers to jump the Jaguars who will most likely pick Fournette if he drops to them.

Trade will be Panthers first round pick this year (#8), and two second round picks (#40 2017, 2nd round pick 2018), Panther still hold the last pick in the second round, but it's the old Patriots pick, and a second round pick for next year in the 2018 Draft would hold more potential value.

For value purposes the Panthers two second round picks this year hold the same value as the 23rd pick in the draft, it will be an equivalent of #8 and #23 for #2.

Draft pick value trade chart -- http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/draft/draft-trade-chart/

#8 (1400) + #40(500) +64(270)/(Panthers 2018 2nd) = 2170(2480-2170 depending on 2018 2nd) or basically pick #3 (2200 value) in this years draft. (2018 2nd would have potential of 580-270)

49'ers bite because they will still have many good options at #8, and pick up more picks which they really need.

Thoughts?

I rather have him fall to #8 but I'm down for this long as we don't overplay the hand.

If we do something that stupid for a guy at a position with an already alarmingly short career length then I will firmly hop off the Gettleman bandwagon and claim him Hurney 2.0.

To me, that trade is completely idiotic. There are plenty of other really good players that will be available when we pick.

As nice as it would be to have Fournette, he has the smallest window of effectiveness of all the available talent near the top of the draft. I'd be alright with taking him at 8 but rage if we trade up to 2.

I'd love to have Fournette, but that would really be putting all of our eggs in one basket.

If it means having to trade up to #2, I'd pass.

This is me.  I love ya @Doc Holiday, but just don't think trading the farm to get him is best.  While he's a real talent, and a game changer, and could become our franchise back, I'm not sure that's the best route considering the quality in this draft.

Of course, Rivera's comments could also have been more gamesmanship for the draft.  I want Fournette to fall to us, I want everyone to think that the RB position is just not that valuable.  I want people to go QB crazy!  But I don't want to give up high picks for him.

I'd much rather take the bpa and get guys like Zay Jones in the second round who can help our hapless receiving core. While acquiring a day one starter at pick 8. No need to give up our entire draft basically for a RB. If it was not such a deep class, much like the one Elliott came out of then I'd say it may be worth it but it's just not. Not unless we're talking about the next Julio Jones at receiver.
