Your #1 position...

If you had one move to make to take us back to the SB what would it be and why? What position would you push your chips all on the table for that you are 100% on?

In terms of the draft we can rule out OT. Plus Dave already pushed a ton of chips foward on Kalil.

I know I'm bending the rules on your question here but I'd like to offer up some top prospects who can help us the most at 8.

WR-I think a stud receiver to compliment KB would be awesome. I like Corey Davis in the draft for that. To me this is the most glaring hole for the 17 roster. If we can get  someone like a Boldin to agree to a 1 year deal prior to the draft or trade for a solid vet using our 99th or later pick id feel much more at ease going true BPA at 8. Davis may still be that but we won't know until we get to 8.

CB-  Can see no wrong with taking another top tier corner to go across from Bradberry. Marshon Lattimore would be my choice in the draft. If Sidney Jones falls far enough I could see is making a move on him with our pick 64 or 99.

TE- A 2nd playmaking Tight End would nice as well. OJ Howard fits that bill the best in the draft. However in terms of value may be wiser to wait until round 2 for this.

SS- Jamal Adams is the obvious. He's everything you look for in a safety and has very good coverage skills that could help against pass happy teams or ones with elite tight ends. Adding him to our defense would almost be unfair if Coleman can get back to his level of 2015 play with his move back to FS.

DE- The only 2 I'd consider at 8 are likely to be gone (Garrett and Thomas) and if for some reason they make it to 8 that would cause me to pause think real hard on why they fell that far. I think a talented guy who can beat out Horton can be found in day 2 as well here. My favorite non first rounder is Tarell Basham. Side note: I do get this sick feeling that Gettleman won't be able to resist drafting Barnett at 8.

RB- Leonard Fournette is the best choice at 8.  Mcaffery could be a matchup nightmare moving him all over the field. He'd be a better compliment to Stewart but would leave us still looking for a long term solution for a workhorse.  Either way this draft is loaded with backs and I'm sure we will upgrade the depth chart at some point through the draft.

FS- Hooker is a baller but we are already paying Coleman good money to man the FS spot. If he's BPA then sure but he wouldn't make the most immediate impact for 2017 because of us already having Coleman.

When you play zone defense you need pressure from the front 4. You need a DE and a DT who can take over a game. If not, then you need a CB who can generate turnovers with elite play. There isn't a DE or DT at 8 who can take over a game and rack up sacks and pressure. We don't have that. So you look in the draft for a CB who can run with any WR and take the ball away. You can sit back and tackle after the catch, you have to go get the ball. We had that with Norman, and that changed everything. So I'd be looking to draft Lattimore assuming Fournette is gone, and maybe even over Fournette. Lattimore can get us the interceptions we need to beat better teams with high powered offenses. So the number #1 position is CB given this draft. Without Lattimore our defense is just not SB level imo.

herein lies the problem, one wont do it...that's a fools bet...we need multiple positions but with this draft we could go several  different ways and still get coverage...

Grab lattimore at 8, either trade up for Ross in the bottom of the first or a de/ot that has slipped. Use our remaining 3rd and 4th on a Te and wr. Hopefully jake butt/leggett and cooper kupp. I think a variation of those moves not only sets us up for a shot this year but for years going forward, regardless there needs to be some moves made on offense, questions at ot and wr still remain.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
