Panthers Have Worked Out Tennessee QB Josh Dobbs

The big question with Dobbs is not if he was a good college quarterback (he was), but how will he translate in the NFL. Dobbs is a perfect example of why there is a real concern for running qbs in the NFL. A NFL QB has to win with his head, then his arm, then his legs. There was a HUGE question if Cam could with with his head and reads before he entered the NFL.

I personally like Dobbs, he is a great teammate, incredibly intelligent, very athletic, strong enough arm, and great running instincts, and excellent deep ball accuracy. There is a lot to like.

I have doubts that Dobbs will be a quality NFL quarterback, i guess he could be a good backup. He does not read the field well,  his ball placement on short and intermediate routs has not shown progress in the last two years. He does not progress through his reads and his pre-snap evaluations and tends to be glued to a receiver. He could mask these faults in college because he could escape the pocket and placed stress on opposing D's to account for his legs which created separation for his receivers. This will not happen in the NFL.

He is most definitely a development project which is why he is projected a day 3 pick. In my opinion his effectiveness in the NFL will rest solely on his ability to read (both pre-snap and progressions) and complete short and intermediate passes. He has a LOT of the same concerns that Cam had coming out, but he has a considerably smaller frame and will not be able to create the same way Cam did with his legs because he is 216 lbs.

I think a higher ceiling prospect is Chad Kelly, but he has off the field concerns you will NOT get with Dobbs. Also Kelly takes too many chances outside the pocket and also struggles with progressions.

I didn't watch a game last year, but this appears to be the most objective opinion in the thread. That being said, I would rather have a guy that is strong at going through his progressions and reading defenses than not (the latter being something that would hopefully come with experience).

As for drafting a kicker? Only if he is the BPA. The position seems so helter skelter in terms of who actually translates to the pros, I just a think that odds are you can bring in UDFAs to get the job done.

Not a fan of Kelly either.  He has a big arm and can run--with an ACL tear will have to see what happens to his running style, but makes incredible poor decisions and throws too many interceptions due to trying to fit it into a receiver.  That and his poor off the field decisions would have me take him off our board as well.

I agree with this, but man some of the throws he makes are jaw droppers... also he has that competitive streak. What's they saying something like: everyone wants to win, give me a player that hates to lose.

I do think his off the field stuff may DQ him from panthers anyways.

Makes sense. He could be had very late, possibly even as a UDFA and he'd be a better backup for Cam stylistically than DA. Plus, who knows how much longer DA will continue to play anyway? Could be an ideal guy to groom on the PS for a year or two hoping to make him a quality backup.

This...

But with the added ability to pull a new England and trade him for a 1st in 3 years

What did he do last year, sir?  Oh, be the most efficient QB in College Football history for a year?  Yep.  What I thought.

Yep, Mayfield was fantastic.

His OL and RB and WR utterly outclassed Dobbs in talent as well.

I'm not even saying Dobbs would have done close to as well as Mayfield if they had swapped teams either.  Mayfield is obviously the more talented and better player.

I'm just mocking your silly opinion that Dobbs is "trash".

Dude, he played like s hit vs Appalachian State.  Just stop while you're behind man. I had him on my College Football Fantasy team, I think I would know how well he did.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

You judge whether a player is "trash" or not because of your vast knowledge of fantasy football.

OK.

I understand now.

With Dobbs things were never as good or bad as they seemed, and there was a lot of good and bad.  Add it all up and he's a day 3/backup level player, perfect for us.

I wouldn't let the App State game be the end all be all.  They didn't even try to go downfield and the one time they did it was a TD.  Credit to App, but Tennessee always plays a brutal conference and nonconference schedule and will sandbag to not show much in a game like that.
