For those in the crowd who want us to draft a kicker: pump the brakes

Who would beat him or her(?) in the competition?  It damn sure won't be GaNO.  Nothing against him personally, but his performance in big moments has created a cancer of doubt that must be removed so this team and fan base can move forward.  In the unlikely event that an UDFA or another vet beats out our drafted kicker then that means we're getting even better performance and value than anticipated.  I can live with that.

You're ready to move on from Gano, so then drafting a kicker makes sense.  You aren't going to have to worry about the loss and in your view you'll get a better kicker and pull back about 2.5 million on cap space.  Considering UDFAs are about as successful as draft picks and I don't think the organization is ready to move on so my guess would be for a lower risk signing like an UDFA or another vet.

I hope beyond words that you're wrong and they are indeed going to move on.  Considering the Patriots let Vinatieri go to draft Gostkowski out of Memphis, it's simply mind numbing to even THINK that the organization would not be ready to move on.

I like the idea of an UDFA more.  Less money and still solid competition.

One I'd expect the Panthers to know a good bit about is Matt Davis. A local kid hidden at D2 UNC-Pembroke that will go undrafted. 84.1% career accuracy (D2 record). Long of 58 (6/7 from 50+ last year).

Well, yeah, but the thing about UDFA is the one you really want may decide you're not the team they want to play for.

Until the CBA between the NFL and the NFLPA changes it, if you use a very low round draft pick, your guy doesn't get that choice.

That's true but if you're worried about getting a specific UDFA kicker, throw a little extra money at them (5k should do it) and that's cheaper then a draft pick.

Let's say, just as a hypothetical example, that the kid you want to sign as an UDFA went to Texas.

Let's also say the Dallas Cowboys have decided to offer him a try-out.

What is that kid with a choice going to do?  Sign with the team he always dreamed of playing for?  Or take your 5K?

UDFA is always a crap-shoot.

There's certainly those situations, but I'd be willing to bet that more often then not kid is taking the money. That spot isn't guaranteed but the cash is.
