So highly regarded that the owners turned on him during both the referee strike and the Rams moving to LA over the chargers and Raiders? Let me find that article where the owners blindsided him and he threw a hissy fit saying how much he's done for the league.

"A number of owners, including, according to people with knowledge of the negotiations, the Panthers’ Jerry Richardson and the Jets’ Woody Johnson, initially dug in on Tuesday, reluctant to make any deal under such public pressure. Others, including the Patriots’ Robert Kraft and the Giants’ John Mara, were concerned that damage was being done to the league by the subpar officiating and the focus on it."

These are just the first 2 google hits.

“There is no more respected owner in the league than Jerry Richardson,” New York Giants co-owner John Mara said Tuesday, via Darin Gantt amd Joe Person of the Rock Hill Herald.

I'm wondering how that would work.  Once the new owner takes control he could potentially do whatever he wanted.  Right?

I'm no legal expert, but if there is a clause preventing the new owner from moving the team inserted in the deal then it would have to be adhered to.

Of course, things can be negotiated. Perhaps a clause like that would have a timeframe attached to it. Maybe the owner can null a clause for a certain fee. Idk.

Hopefully, JR would only sell the team to someone truly dedicated to keeping the team here in Charlotte

I don't understand what you are trying to point out here. It is noted that he got overruled on both the ref lockout and the Rams move to LA. Those are just two examples. Obviously if a local media memeber asks for a comment from another owner they aren't going to bash him. They are technically functioning as a 32 person partnership. How many a owners came out and bashed Kraft and the Patriots during deflategate?

It is legitimately laugh out loud funny that you listed JR with Kraft, Rooney, and Mara. I can promise you the opinion of Jerry outside the Carolinas is not high at all.

That may be true from the Large Market areas, as JR has been a very active/vocal leader for the Small Market teams when it comes to the annual owners meetings and dealing with the shield.

Outside of those three names, Kraft, Rooney, and Mara, give me one current owner you would prefer to JR?

I've got no real skin in the game to continue this discussion. If you're discounting all public statements but allowing your divined intent from actions, then there isn't anything I can say or point to that will change your mind.

I was simply pointing out that we have seen multiple stories over the years indicating that he was among the top when it came to respected owners...just outside of the top tier. In fact, he gets poo on this board for bending over backwards for the league. But it's not that big a deal. You keep doing you.

I know I always need to specify this for people because they lack common sense, but the comment below in no way expresses my feelings on the health of Jerry Richardson. I don't wish death or poor health on my worst enemy, let alone Jerry Richardson.

What a shame this news about the team being sold is not true. It was exciting for a few hours to think there was actually going to be a succession plan going forward and we did not have to worry about the team moving. It was also exciting to imagine having an owner for this first time in franchise history who valued the team over the shield. He has the right to own the team until death, but I do wish he would have some type of succession plan.

How do you know he doesn't have a succession plan already?

Yeah, I know that.  I was just wondering what kind of agreement or contract language Jerry could put into the sale that would legally keep the new owner from moving someday.

I think they would have to honor the tether the team currently has with the city of Charlotte, but there's only a year or two left on that agreement. I'm assuming the contract drawn up by the NFL could include language that the team would not be considered for relocation until after a certain year (ex. 5 years).

I'm building my companies and holdings with the intent and purposes every day in my life to sell out, cash in and have an ownership stake in the Panthers one day and to carry on the legacy and tradition Mr. Richardson brought to the organization

God I Hope he sells soon so this is not a possibility.

we would still have the shield at midfield and Gettleman would have been fired and rehired 20 times already since January.
