Bucky talks Cam and our offensive evolution

Let's be real, Huddle. Cam Newton is going to have to improve if the Panthers' offensive evolution is going to be viable.  Sure, Dave Gettleman will have to up his game with some offensive weapons, and the coaches are going to have to improve upon play calling and choice of personnel on game days, but, as the field general, Cam is going to have to do what many people have been harping on him for years to do which is become a more efficient pocket passer. Bucky Brooks is no exception.

"Newton must become a more accurate thrower on quick-rhythm concepts. He is terrific throwing slants, seams and skinny posts following quick play-action or zone-read fakes, but he misses the mark when he is asked to "catch, rip and fire" on traditional quick-game routes (slant-flat combinations, quick outs, hitches, etc.)...If Newton wants to improve in this area, he has to spend more time working on his footwork and mechanics."

Now there is a reason why Brooks wants Cam to improve from the pocket. Like many people(myself included in light of Cam's inuries), Brooks doesn't believe that the way that the Panthers have used Cam thus far is viable...that's if we want Cam to have a nice long career.  Cam is not a battering ram of a running back that can take the hits of a quarterback and a running back.

"Instead of running between the tackles on zone-read or power-read plays, the Panthers star should be utilized on more bootleg and roll-out action plays where he can run on the perimeter with fewer defenders in close proximity. In addition, the movement-based plays will help Newton become more efficient as a passer as he targets receivers at different levels (flat, deep crosser or comeback route at intermediate depth and a vertical route) on a half-field read."

Along with a "movement-based passing" game that includes some misdirection, I will specifically add play-action to that number.  These are things that will not only hopefully help preserve Cam's health, but should help Cam and the entire offense thrive, including our receivers.

"Naturally, some observers will suggest that using more bootleg plays ripped directly out of a high school playbook will stunt Newton's growth as a passer. But I believe the clever utilization of a movement-based passing game actually creates more big-play opportunities for the Panthers through the air. In addition, the team's personnel is better suited to play in a play-action heavy offense that puts the quarterback on the move and uses deception to create open windows for receivers. Considering the lack of speed and explosiveness that Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess bring to the table, the team needs to find ways to help them get separation on the outside. The combination of motion and misdirection could help the big-bodied pass catchers find more room down the field."

Yeah, our "big-bodied" pass catchers would probably get a boost, but in my mind everyone from the running backs to the tight end{s} to the smaller receivers would benefit as well.

Sure, Dave will have to provide the pieces, and Rivera and Shula are really going to have to put their thinking caps on, but Cam is going to have to commit himself to refining his craft if this whole evolution thing is going to work.

As far as I'm concerned, Bucky Brooks is right on point.

Exactly what many of us here on the Huddle have been screaming for for years.

Yet Shula will continue with the 7-step drops.

P.S. This is the kind of play where a kid like McCaffrey would be deadly.

People on here have been screaming to roll cam out once in a while. Seems like people from the outside feel the same. Only thing I don't like about on the run, if he does throw off one foot, he is completely vulnerable for a yuge hit. It makes sense though, roll him out, no one open them run. We will be fine. We all know Cam is legit.

If we're going to be this "movement-based passing game", the first thing that needs to change is the pace of play calling in our offense.  When we're not in a no-huddle or two minute offense, we refuse to develop rhythm.  It's been clear as day to even the casual for a while in my opinion.

Bootlegs and roll-outs are where Cam can thrive.  The overuse of the read-option has been insanely apparent for years.  Cam faking out a hand-off in shotgun and by the time we're moving forward, him or Stewart are surrounded by defenders with a pocket collapsed.

The staff said they were going to change this going into last season but obviously didn't.

I agree Cam nees to go back to the basics. He should also slim down little bit and get his speed up again like 2011.

Going back to a traditonal run game and 2 TE set will play into strenght of the perssonell and help us have consistent  offense throughout the season.

GIve Cam better protection and we'll see improved accuracy. His fundamentals usually look solid early in the season, but progressively break down and get worse over the course of the season as the hits take their toll. I don't care how big and tough you are, when your pass protection sucks and you're taking a beating out there, eventually you start hearing footsteps.

SPARTANBURG

........

But the Carolina Panthers’ sixth-year quarterback still has things he can improve on.

Just ask his employer.

Newton said Jerry Richardson has implored the strong-armed quarterback to improve his accuracy on some of the shorter throws that defenses often concede. Newton started to refer to the team’s owner and founder as “Coach Richardson” on Friday before correcting himself.

“As Mr. Richardson says, the layups. The gimme throws,” Newton said. “I always ask for brutal honesty from the superior forces that are in my life, from coach (Ron) Rivera to Mr. Richardson to Mr. (Dave) Gettleman and from my father.

“You hear it often: Yeah, you can throw the comebacks and the digs. But what about the checkdowns and slants and just getting back to the small nuances of the game? That makes big differences.”

In his first public comments of training camp, Newton talked about how – throughout a hectic offseason that included the taping of his new Nickelodeon show – he looked forward to returning to Wofford and building on the Panthers’ NFC championship season of 2015.

“Just the excruciating offseason with traveling and being here, being there, making family time. Doing something I’ve never done with the TV show. From the partnerships and things that you already have to do contractually, I couldn’t wait,” he said.

“Knowing I could have all my focus on Spartanburg and the Carolina Panthers ... I’ve been counting the days just to get back with the guys.”

Newton arrived at camp sporting a blonde goatee and an oversized straw hat with a frayed brim.

While some teammates joked with Newton about his new look, wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin was complimentary.

“Swag, man,” Benjamin said. “That’s Cam. He’s a trendsetter.”

July 29, 2016

Hoping an improved Oline, better O talent and a realization from the coaching staff  change is imperative the stuff Cam talked about before the 2016 season will come to fruition. Cam needs to work his ass off in camp as well. Get 'er done.

This all sounds great but it sounds like cam's injury has kept him from practicing this off season and he won't be returning to work on his play until training camp. Not a good thing considering how much he needs to work on to improve.

Cam is deadly accurate and dominant when he isn't sitting around waiting on the play call and then having to snap the ball without surveying the defense to avoid delay of game penalties. Offense won't evolve with Conservative Ron and the Shula.
