Gettleman: Panthers WILL pick up KB's 5th year option

It wasn't. It makes no sense in any way. What part of it was valid. Sure didn't take long for it to be debunked. The laughable part is anyone that gave the story an ounce of credibility.

I saw Voth's original tweet.  There was no suggestion it was a story, just something he wanted to get out there for discussion... feel out what the fans are thinking.  There was nothing like "I'm hearing that DG may not excercise option on KB"

Both the original & his follow up make that clear.

Nothing in that hints that KB would not be picked up.  Just FYI, this is a looming deadline.  Let's discuss.

I *DO* agree that Voth sometimes speculates (making us think that Dorsey would be leaving as QB coach), but his sources are usually pretty good, and I'm glad we've got him as a beat writer.

I disagree. First, it shouldn't have been a question in any rational person's mind. No one with any understanding of the 5th year option process would even consider it a question. Posing it as a question, like he did, raised doubt all over. What if GMan wanted to wait to announce it May 2? Now he had to do it so this didn't become an issue with KB, and the fanbase, for the next month. Why not just get an answer before posing an open ended statement?

Seems likely Gettleman saw the report and put it to bed quickly.  Like I said in that other thread, it was a no brainier to pick up the 8 million dollar 5th year option. If he returns to his rookie form it would take a long term deal or franchise tags which would cost likely 16 mil and 14 mil next year. The last 3 games he turned it on. This year he will be fully confident. I expect a career year. Getting him for half price for another year is an easy decision to make.

Where is this question you're referring to? I think you're reading way too much into it.

What report are you talking about specifically?

We've been over this a few times.....posts on Twitter do not equate to clicks. Unless he writes an article that he's pushing through Twitter, there is no monetary gain to having a conversation with your audience. I, for one, had no idea that May was the deadline. So I'm happy this conversation happened today. I also can process it and move on - we should all be able to do that.

Not clicks, retweets. It's exposure either way.

But like you said, it's been cleared up. Honestly didn't really need to be in the first place though.

I guess. But the only reason this Tweet is getting any "exposure" is because we have a bunch of silly fans making it more than it is. I see it simply as "The KB option date is looming. No one's mentioned it yet. I'm going to ask GMan in the presser today". And....that's pretty much what happened until we blew it out of proportion and starting reading into it too much.

That's not what I was referring to.

His response below to a fan seems to have gotten the whole thing in motion.

in reply to @panther1gb89

@panther1gb89 if you love the guy, you could sign him to long-term deal. KB isn’t one of those guys9:48 AM · Mar 24, 2017

I didn't see that one. That's interesting. Did the other guy ask if there were other options than the 5th year option?

I don't necessarily disagree though. I don't think after last season they're ready to lock KB up longterm. Seems like KB needs to have a good 2017 to have them consider that.

The above is why Voth had to put "will" in all caps when he tweeted Gettleman will exercise the 5th year option on KB.

The Panthers probably should have just confirmed this already.

But I think most people figured it was a sure thing KB was going to be here this year at least regardless. Especially when you consider what transpired last season, and now shoulder surgery looming for our franchise QB.

I agree he needs to have a very good 2017 season. I think he will, people have been hard on him, and at times in 2016 he was a bit questionable, but I think the season took a toll on our players psychologically. He will bounce back.

Of course he would be here for sure this season - the option that will be picked up is for 2018.

I agree. I'm still completely on Team KB. I think he deserves some criticism for some bad plays last year, but he should definitely get the benefit of the doubt. Last season sucked all-around. I think KB will be fine.

On another note...I was just skimming through some pics from last year's away games. I'm starting to get the itch to get back out there. It's going to be a long summer waiting for football.
