Delhomme & Beuerlein discuss Newton's surgery

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more of Cam under center and true play action, not this half assed fake read option stuff we do out of the shotgun that isn't fooling anyone anymore these days.

It's 100% on the staff that Cam still seems less comfortable operating under center. You can't get better at what you don't work to improve. I understand keeping Cam in the shotgun almost exclusively in his first year or two, but ultimately you have to help him and your offense evolve and that's where we've failed.

If it were an issue it would have been brought up in this interview. Shoulder wasn't getting worse while playing remaining games it's fine that he played get the fug over it

Come on now.....Regardless of the high level athlete he is, Cam is a human being dude...I don't understand what's so difficult in admitting that for his long term health it would have been smart to not allow him to play.  It's ridiculous to say that if you have any type of injury whatsoever, that ignoring it and continuing to play, is not a risky move.  You weigh risk vs. reward and then make informed decisions.  You get the fug over it.

I'll be very surprised if our offense looks drastically different. Honestly, I'm expecting the same ole same ole just with less read option. The biggest concern with Cam missing OTAs is that he and the new receivers (hopefully there's still a drafted WR and #2 TE coming) will be missing valuable time to build chemistry.

I'll be ecstatic is we drop the read-option from our playbook. Teams have come to expect that play from us so much that 9/10 it results in a loss of yards or no gain.

I'm fine with keeping it in the playbook, it just needs to be drastically reduced. We've overused it and defenses have adapted to stop it. The dumpster fire situation at OL adding help.

I don't want to completely drop it as then defenses wouldn't have to account for it, but we really shouldn't be running it more than two or three times a game. Basically just enough to force defenses to respect it. The read option should be a wrinkle to our offense, not a staple.

Interesting point Jake made regarding continuity in the staff and system. I wonder if this injury and the potential for Cam to miss significant offseason time play st least some role in Shula and Dorsey being retained?

100% confirmed Shula slightly tore Cam's rotator cuff to keep his job.

I'm trying to recall when Cam's ankle was banged up.... didn't he have a similar path to surgery? Like, he should have gotten it done earlier than he did and we were questioning why he waited?

Maybe I'm confusing it or not remembering correctly, but if so, this is another issue that we have to question the decision making of whoever is responsible.  Is it Cam or is it the training staff thats advising him?

Steve Beuerlein's pointing about not holding on to the ball so long was interesting to me. Some of you who remember when Beuerlein was here will remember that he took a straight beating in '99 and '00 and he also had a tendency to hold onto the ball for too long. It might be smart for Cam to listen to someone who had 21 surgeries from football injuries because of this. I love me some Cam and I want to see him as the starting QB for the Panthers for a long time to come.
