Delhomme & Beuerlein discuss Newton's surgery

Delhomme said if he could boil down his advice to two words for Panthers fans, it would be these: “Don’t panic.”

“You have to think of what sort of shoulder injury that Drew Brees came back from – it was way, way worse than this,” Delhomme said. “It always seems like people are on the verge of panicking when a quarterback has an injury to his throwing arm, but I don’t foresee this as being the kind of thing that affects Cam that much.”

Newton will miss some of the Panthers’ offseason work before training camp, but Delhomme said that wouldn’t matter much.

“That’s not really significant for Cam in the way it would be for a young quarterback,” Delhomme said. “It’s not like he’s going to a new offensive system. He’s got more or less the same cast of characters in terms of coaches and players, except we can all hope they give him some more help on offense. That will help him a lot. He can still be in the meetings, he just can’t throw.”

Said Beuerlein, who has had 21 surgeries in his lifetime related to football injuries but never one on a rotator cuff: “I’m sure it will be a non-issue. But you do look at it now and say: ‘Why do you waste three months before the surgery?’ My mentality was always to eliminate the doubt in the offseason, go ahead and fix what needs fixing through surgery, rehab it and move on. On the other hand, I have no doubt the Panthers thought this through from every angle and had agreed on a decision date as to when surgery would have to be done by – if needed – so Cam would be ready for training camp. So I actually expect he will be ready for camp.”

Beuerlein said he felt the larger issue for Newton was the number of big hits he keeps taking – Newton suffered a concussion last season after one of those when he slowed down just before the end zone against Atlanta. He ultimately missed one game because of that blow.

When I mentioned that I thought the Panthers had to get Newton more help on offense during April’s draft to address this, Beuerlein said: “Yes, but some of it Cam has to address himself. He brings some of those shots on himself sometimes by holding the ball too long or not protecting himself. He’s still young enough (Newton is 27) that he can recover from surgeries well, but if he keeps taking those kinds of shots during his career he will feel old pretty soon.”

Beuerlein, a longtime national TV broadcaster, said he ultimately expected Newton to have a big year in 2017.

“There are some young quarterbacks who started off with a lot of success – like Colin Kaepernick or RG3 (Robert Griffin III) – and then have struggled,” Beuerlein said. “They have never really gotten their swagger back. I don’t think that will be a problem with Cam, though. Last season I think the natural reaction for the Panthers – not just Cam, but everybody – was to think, ‘Hey, we’re pretty good.’ All of a sudden you get hit in the mouth a few times and you’re going, ‘Wait a minute, don’t you understand? We played in the Super Bowl!’ I think this year that Cam will be a man on a mission.”

Very good read. Jake Delhomme and Steve Beuerlein make a lot of valid points.

I think it's a non-issue as far as affecting him to where he can't perform. I also think he will have a decent year. He plays some of his best football when he feels like he has something to prove. I don't think the injury is that bad, but I do think they could've started the process earlier. Should've, could've, would've. Nothing can be changed. I wish him a speedy recovery and come training camp, he's ready. He's young, in shape and takes pretty good care of his body. He has a glass of wine every now and then and a cigar. He'll be fine.

Interesting point Jake made regarding continuity in the staff and system. I wonder if this injury and the potential for Cam to miss significant offseason time play st least some role in Shula and Dorsey being retained?

I hope not, but I'm pretty sure if Cam misses significant time, it will be used as an excuse to keep the coaching staff intact. Even if he doesn't miss significant time, they will bring up his surgery as an excuse to keep these looney tunes. Rivera is probably preparing his continuity speech right now.

No doubts Cam comes back from this with no problem.  Also not that concerned with him missing rep's in OTA's or training camp (if it comes to that).  Although I will say I hope he gets to test everything out in some limited preseason live action prior to week 1.

Hearing the analysis from these 2 guys just reiterates what we already know.  That Cam will be fine.  The lingering issue is the fact that he was allowed to continue playing after that first MRI revealed the partial tear, as has been mentioned in multiple threads.  Given last seasons circumstances in December....there is simply no excuse for having Cam on the field, period.

If it were an issue it would have been brought up in this interview. Shoulder wasn't getting worse while playing remaining games it's fine that he played get the fug over it

If people get over it then all the narratives go away......

RR hates Cam, Shula hates Cam......

the Panthers hate Cam......etc.

Agree there's *some* comfort in this fact, but the continuity might be less than advertised:

1) We lost Ginn & AJ Klein to the Saints.  That's gonna require changing our play calls.

2) We're going to be bringing in probably a couple of key new players on offense.  New LT, CJ#2; Shepard, new fullback, draftees - perhaps a top RB or TE... Lots of new folks Cam has to get a chance to work with.

3) We've been talking about offensive evolution, so hopefully won't be running same old same old plays...

Sure why not. This organization always seems to pull excuses out of their ass as reasons for sticking with mediocrity instead of finding something better.

I'll be very surprised if our offense looks drastically different. Honestly, I'm expecting the same ole same ole just with less read option. The biggest concern with Cam missing OTAs is that he and the new receivers (hopefully there's still a drafted WR and #2 TE coming) will be missing valuable time to build chemistry.

    • True.  Sam and Baker did not do well here but went on to better things under better coaching, circumstances or both.  The real question is, ‘why aren’t the Panthers able to get improved performance out of ‘broken toys’, similar to Minnesota and Tampa? That is a rhetorical question.  I think we know the answer.   [The cultural reference to Pogo dates me, I admit.]
    • Did I mention that he was on worse teams?  Yes.  Do QBs alone win games?  No.  Did Cam, on a much better team with some awesome defenses ever have 2 consecutive winning seasons?  No.  So now you are cherry picking,  If the overall stats are similar, you take a look at him.   I told you that you look at his skill set---but you wanted to tell me that he sucks and mentioned performance.  I just presented performance--and his numbers are very similar to Cam Newton's numbers--a player most call the best Panther QB ever--and I agree.  By the way, Fumbles are evidence of how bad his OL has been--so you are saying that a QB in a situation worse than Cam's who has stats and physical abilities very similar to Cam's should not be given a look when you have Bryce Young at QB?  You are going with that story because you simply talked your way into a corner and now you are trying to save face.  No good GM would do what you suggest because "he sucks."  Sorry, but the facts do not support you.  But no matter what eye-opening details I provide, there are some who are going to go their Google machines to try to find some reason to support an ignorant approach to developing the QB position.  You ignored the similarities to Cam and went cherry picking.  I know what you are doing--but I am only suggesting (as I have stated before) that we bring him in as one of three approaches to resolving the QB issue. Compete with Bryce and draft a QB. Basically, I am suggesting that Jones has the potential to replace Dalton and compete with Young.  He is a battered stock that could get better in a better situation--that is human nature.  Instead, I am called a Daniel Jones lover and superfan.  That is good debate--But a real sign of mature thinking is the inability to LOGICALLY consider alternative perspectives--which is actually a characteristic of intelligence.  Just so you know, I critique and perform research in my job.  I am often amazed at how the numbers do not support my suppositions.  I learned that my impression is often wrong until I look at the data.  In this case, I have considered all the important variables and he should get a shot.  Numbers don't lie--and when you and others resort to twisted name calling directed toward the poster--it verifies my position.
    • I don’t get this, I know that is the popular thought process but I just don’t think it’s true.  For instance head to head last year the ACC had a winning record against the SEC.  The SEC had a losing record in bowl games. This year so far the head to head is 2-3 SEC and that’s with a fluke Vandy win in week one.  I see the ACC taking another head to head winning season after next week.  The SEC is mostly hype with 3 good teams, in my opinion.  But to say any ACC team would get exposed I believe is a stretch
