Quarterbacks as a group tend to have short careers. Mobile QBs have short careers, pocket passers have short careers. Folks like Brady, Manning and Brees are outliers. It's a rough sport and to have a Favre-like career isn't the norm, even for franchise QBs.

We're just starting to see the wear and tear begin on him. Making it to 30 in this league is a pretty big deal. He's got the talent and dedication, but it is just a matter of when and if a big injury takes him or if he can pass through safely.

To be fair though, the big reason why many QBs have short careers isn't that they're injured.  It's more often because they're not that great.

That can be said of a lot of positions, but in other spots you can hang around for a while even if you're only half-decent. Not so much at QB.

So you're saying we should draft Cam Robinson at 8 and trade the rest of our picks to get Ryan Ramzyck?

Nah, just keep up with what you're doing. Keep getting re-treads that can't play and keep picking up UFA OT's that protect your Franchise QB. Yeah, that works just fine.

No disagreement here, but there are a lot of really good players who have injury shortened careers. They never really get the chance to become one of the greats.

And Cam is a phenom, just a wunderkind. He's still young and full of potential and while we see him as a great, he hasn't been around long enough for those guys in the gold jackets and the nominating journalists to really put him the pantheon quite yet. Here's hoping that he gets more than three years to show everyone just how incredibly talented he is.

Because of what Cam is handed on this team in terms of offensive help, I can easily see him pulling an Arian Foster and losing the love and hanging it up early. Foster was beat up and not enjoying the game, so he walked. Can could do the same, considering his injuries are stacking up and he has so much to occupy him away from football.

I see the CPK brigade is out in full force in this thread. However, this is one time I will agree. Gettleman has got to get Cam some help and protection or he's not going to last. And fug the league for not protecting him like they're supposed to.

Can't transition to a pocket passer with no skill players around you worth a damn and a patch work offensive line.

But screw that lets keep bringing in defensive players for visits.

Cam Newton had the franchise OT, clutch TE, and WR needed to succeed from 2011 to 2013 in the passing game. The problem is over the past 3 seasons when Cam has developed into an MVP candidate. Cam has been without a franchise OT and a starting WR that can catch more than 50% of the passes thrown to them. The closest he came to a dependable WR the past 3 seasons was Jerricho Cotchery, which in my opinion was just enough to get Cam enough of a passing game to lead the offense to the highest scoring offense in the league.

Relying on one dependable player to compliment Cam in the passing game with Greg Olsen is not going to help the running game, the run option threat Cam needs to loosen up the defense, or the dependability of the passing game to convert 1st downs. Cam needs a franchise LT to trust against speed rushers and a receiver who can catch more than 60% of his targets - preferably in the slot.

In 2015, Cam had the luck of a schedule void of premier speed rushers and Cotchery to lean on come 2nd/3rd and long. When will the front office seriously address these key offensive issues? I know people do not care for Shula, but Shula is not even one of the top 3 reasons for offensive inefficiency.

As Cam goes the running QB thing is BS. Knowing the NFL and the officials are stacking the cards against you, allowing guys free shots while they look the other way is the ONLY reason Cam would hang it up. He's bigger, stronger and faster than everybody and the only way they can stop him is to bend the rules against him. It's blatant and disgusting.

The Panther FO doesn't do him any favors either.

Agree. I would hate it but I don't blame him. His finances are set, he has a ton of personality and talent. I would imagine he will find something else to challenge him and allow him to be competitive, I would.

So Ben is 35 and entering his 13th season and still playing. Cam is 27 and entering his 7th season but somehow he only has 3 years left and Ben's career proves it???? Ben has had less O line support than Cam over the years. I must be missing something????? Seems to me Cam has 6 or more years left based on the comparison.

And who thought that Cam would be running a bunch at age 30. Everyone has said he needs to transition to a pocket passer as he gets older.

If fantasy football has taught us anything is 30 yr old rbs and 300 carries in 1 yr create significant drop offs.

So a 30 yr old rb, no matter how good a line falls exponentially.

300 carries in 1 season, no matter the yardage ALWAYS sees a big drop off the following yr.

Cam isn't close to 300 rushes in a yr but 80 to 90 carries is like 150 to a rb.

The pocket passers last longer for obvious reasons.

If Cam doesn't become 90% pocket and 10% rush i say 5yrs max.

The Panthers have done a terrible job surrounding him with talent and the NFL referees have done a terrible job of protecting him as a QB and the Panthers are complicit in that because they just sit back and accept it as an organization. Could you imagine the hell that a Robert Craft or Jerry Jones would be raising if their star QB's head was treated like a piñata every Sunday with nary a flag in sight?

And the fact that they want Byrd to win the slot receiver position shows that they still just don't care.
