With the number eighth pick in the 2017 draft, the Carolina Panthers select:

Jonathan Allen

6'3 286 DE/DT Alabama

Now before the rabble rabble commences, let me put it this way: We're talking about the top prospect who could be available.  Well this gentleman was the consensus top-overall pick at one point for last years draft and then came back to school where he was just as good once again.  Let's look at these teams ahead of us:

Browns (x), 49ers, Bears, Jags (x), Titans, Jets, Chargers

I see two teams he's just not going to.  We've got Garret, Fournette, 2 legit safeties, I'd like to think at least one QB going high, Solomon, Lattimore, Howard.  It's not some unlikely scenario he falls to us.  

The question is (maybe even more than Solomon Thomas): Can Allen play as a 4-3 DE?

Nope not a 4-3 DE, but Gettleman would take him in a heartbeat anyway.

Shoulder issues, the history of "great" Alabama defensive players not panning out and the fact he plays a position we are already stacked at(he is not nor will he ever be a full time 4-3 DE, he is a DT) makes this a huge pass. If we are going to do something as stupid as draft Allen we might as well just trade Luke and Cam for conditional seventh rounders to the Patriots because that's the level of stupid taking Allen at 8 would require.

Something to note: He played DE in a 4-man front a lot of 2014 and was great.  That Tennessee game put him on the map.  

Also, we love having a rotation. I mean, once injuries set in, KK was even being brought outside.  I'm buying we'd pick Allen if there.

Problem is that if he falls, that shoulder would have to be worse than we thought. Reminds me of the Clausen situation. NFL teams aren't that dumb. Sometimes there is a reason to be wary.

The correlation between him and star is staggering. Dropping due to health issues and could be there for the taking when we pick although he should have gone several picks earlier. It worked out the first time...
