Bill Voth: Don't Overthink Michael Oher Being On Concussion Protocol

With Michael Oher being on concussion protocol since week 3, many fans are reacting to such in a negative way. Many believe Oher just may be done at this point, and that a concussion that's lasting this long should spell the end for his career.

After all, being on concussion protocol for this long should mean Oher is done, right? Considering his longterm health, the best move is to move on, right?

Well, Bill Voth paints a different picture.

Again, this is mere speculation, but he does bring about some information to surface.

Michael Oher is working out extensively with the Panthers still, and they consider him as a possible RT prospect for next year. Bill Voth also gives the theory that he's on concussion protocol right now because there's no reason for him to get out of it due to no football activities taking place.

Something to think about today. Thoughts?

Good to hear. Many of us here have speculated similarly, but still... he was in the protocol for a looooooong ass time DURING the season. If he could've gotten clearance, I'm sure we would've cleared him because Cam was getting killed out there in his absence.

Once he was on IR and not designated to return, there was no reason to try to clear him. Very possible he hasn't even attempted any steps in the protocol since then.

True, I just don't think that we IR him if we saw hope for his return. The concussion may not be as horrible as we all fear, but there's no sugarcoating that it was definitely a bad one.

Matsko has obviously done a good job getting Oher ready to play LT for the Panthers.  Hell, he seems to be the only coach that can coach him in the NFL thus far.

Here's hoping Matsko has what it takes to get Oher ready to play RT as well.  Fingers crossed.

we need to plan as if he is not going to be available. Even if he was not cleared since the end of the year he was still in concussion protocol for 2 1/2 months during the season. thats scary enough

Agree.  His still "being in the protocol" right now may be "merely" due to the fact that he hasn't been tested for awhile.  But fact remains is that he was in the protocol for something like 8 or 9 weeks of the active season before going on the IR, and also that in December it was reported that he was having issues with his ocular nerve (if I recall correctly)...

As far as Panthers planning goes, I think Dave has to assume Oher never plays a snap again and thus the need to find us a new LT, hence the huge contract for Kalil....   If Oher CAN play again, so much the better, but at least we've got the hole filled for now.

But it would be great if Oher IS healthy and could play one of the tackle spots.  In such a scenario it would be VERY interesting to see who ends up at LT and who at RT...   Whatever the outcome, I hope for Oher & his family's sake that he fully recovers and suffers no long-term consequences from this concussion.  Really wish the best for him.  Would be glad if he could continue to play, but recognize that may not be in his best interest even if he's medically cleared to do so.

Yeah, first of all I hope Oher is okay medically. But, I'm a bit apprehensive of trying him out at RT. This isn't Madden. Part of Oher's struggles throughout his career is that he's been flipflopped a lot between LT and RT and now evidently we plan on doing it to him again. Not sure about that, but then again, Matsko seems to be the "Oher whisperer" so I guess we'll see.

    • It didn’t feel like we’re the Bills bc we’re not a consistent conference contender yet we’re a rebuilding team. But with the game on the line we played just like the Bills went straight down the field and scored a tuddy then converted a 2pt conversion I have to give credit where credit is due. And the chiefs played us like we were the Bills in an AFC championship game, drive down the field and kicked a walk off FG to win at the end very similar to me. Are saying our defense stunk yesterday? Vs an elite offense team with elite coaching an elite QB man idk what you want them to do. KC does these things to the best defenses in the league consistently to win AFC chips and Super Bowls let’s not devalue who they are. I saw us play KC to the wire and barely lose defense did its thing as much as it could. Bingo!!! We’re also forgetting how injured we’ve been defensively this year, yes we need to build up the D but adding a few pieces and D Browns successful rehab should make us a very strong unit again. Couple that with the offense we saw yesterday and we’re winning our division.
    • Canales deserves a lot of credit. I'm very pleased. He's definitely making strides with Bryce. I also think some of his lack of commitment to Bryce as the starter is to motivate Bryce. I think he liked what he saw when Bryce was benched.  Even the Defense looks tremendously better with just a couple more pieces getting healthy. Wonnum has made our pass rush viable again.  I would love to see this team with one more good player across the defensive front, DT or an edge rusher.
    • I didn’t see any limitations yesterday
