Draft Analyst Ethan Young: S Jamal Adams Not Worth Even A First Rounder?

Malik Hooker is better fit for the Panthers with Coleman and the LB corp.

But again Fournete / OJ Howard > Hooker

My biggest concern with Hooker is he takes some of the worst angles I have ever seen a safety take in my life. I mean some of them are Sherrod Martin bad(or worse), he just got away with it in college because he is a really good athlete, that won't work in the NFL.

Now I will acknowledge Hooker has more upside than Adams but his floor is much lower. He is a boom/bust player where as Adams will likely be a starter in this league for a decade even if he never makes a probowl.

I'm reevaluating Adams too, I just don't think he has pro bowl or all pro upside. What's his ceiling? An above average starter? Shouldn't we want more? His best pro comparison is Kam Chancellor. Kam is good, but I expect a players best case scenario to be better than that.

Kam Chancellor?

Give me a pick at 8 that turns out as good as Kam and I would be a happy camper.

I respect the dude.  He seems to have a decent feel for things these past few years.

What I'm not grasping with the is the proportional take-off we're getting comparing Hooker to Adams if we're thinking tackling:ballhawking.  But that's probably not the best way to look at it.

In general, safety is one of the positions slightly more difficult to judge if it's not your job to judge.  With the way games are filmed, they are the least televised of the positions the moment a QB drops back (also why the ballhawks shine).

Adams' closing ability when he reads the play is insane but what I find is there to be a huge amount of unpredictability in SSs.  For example, Dion Bailey was a for sure 1st-3rd rounder back in his draft with no discernible off-field issues yet he was a UDFA and now a sitting FA.  On the other end, Keanu Neal was super hyped, then it cooled down, then picked back up again.

As a fan first and foremost, I'm not going to pretend I can really judge FS or SSs.  I really like Adams, Hooker, Baker, Obi, and here's my sleeper: Rayshawn Jenkins.

At either spot--I don't like the bad tacklers because I want versatility but if there's an average tackler that is a great ballhawk, then you're in mind for Hooker.  Justin Evans will be a starter too, but I don't think he ends up here.

Just don't get sucked into a spot where you have a non-playmaking SS and overly rely on your centerfielder for major break-ups.  We learned this and now have Adams and Coleman, so rotationally, we're flexible with a pick which is awesome.

I'm personally on the Allen or Hooker hype train.

Take Chancellor out of that Seattle defense though and I think he struggles. Earl Thomas over the top gives him a lot of freedom underneath and the CB on his side of the field? Richard Sherman.

He's an excellent fit in that defense, but I'm not so sure that success would translate elsewhere.

Maybe. But you could say that about almost any D player not named JJ Watt. Most great players benefit from a good supporting cast.

How would Luke look behind Fua and McClain?

True and it's probably why so many high profile free agents disappoint. Take the guy out of that system and it can be a bit of a crapshoot.

But, James Anderson racked up 98 tackles and a couple of INTs playing behind Fua and McClain. That was the 2nd most tackles of his career (behind 101 the previous year) and the most INTs. So, I think Luke probably would've done what he does.

Me too. But that's his ceiling, which more than likely means best case scenario, as in he probably won't get there. Hooker ceiling is Ed reed. He's not going to reach that either, but with such a high ceiling, even not reaching that could mean he's an all pro. Not so with Adams. I want a game changer at 8.

If Adams is there at 8 there might be a team interested enough to allow us to trade down. If we pulled that off I wouldn't be able to stop smiling for a week. Fournette is the obvious choice if he's there. The Huddle did a poll on who to draft and Fournette beat Adams by only 3 votes. This proves the Huddle is crazy. It's like when the Huddle wanted Patrick Peterson over Cam Newton, except Adams isn't even as talented as Peterson.

Its about the scheme, we have some of the best defensive players and coaches that can help him develop the fundmental side.

We need secondary players that can cover 1st, we already have a solid DL & LB Corp that will control 85% of the run plays.
