Dwight Clark has ALS

Dwight Clark, 49ers legend, unfortunately has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease (a.k.a. ALS).

What a shame that people must suffer things like ALS, Alzheimer's, and cancer.

I hate it for him. He was a helluva football player back in the day. May peace be upon him as he lives the remainder of his days.

My wifes grandma died from als. It was before I knew my wife but I've heard plenty of stories about how bad it was from her mom. Its a horrible disease and I pray for anyone unfortunate enough to have to go through it or watch a loved one suffer.

Lost my favorite uncle to ALS. Ravaged his mind along with his body, and he still had his memories.

Imagine for a moment,  remembering how smart/intelligent/capable you once were, but reduced to the mentality of an 8 year old.

My prayers go out to Clark and his family.

Dwight lived in Charlotte in the Windsor Park/Darby Acres area.  He played QB at Garinger.  I am old--played football at WCU when coach Bob Waters was diagnosed.  I was close to coach Waters and his family.  I was also close to Dwight Clark and his little brother, Jeff (my age). I lived in Windsor Park too. This article hits home for me, and ties the disease to the 49ers:

I do not remember if Coach Waters told me this or someone else--but he told me that the Niners used to practice on a field that had "tiny mushrooms" all over it when they would arrive for OTAs or summer camp--not sure where the field was.  These "tiny mushrooms" were actually condoms.  Apparently, they used sewage to fertilize the field--or at least that was the theory.  In fact, it may have been his little brother Jeff who told me this--some years later when he was working at NCNB in Charlotte.  Could that be the link?

When I was a kid--Dwight was a big shot around the neighborhood--the QB at the area High School.  I was about 11 then.  Once the older kids were playing a game of football at Windsor Park, and I was watching.  Dwight came over and asked me if I would like to be the center for both teams.  I did and talked about it for days.  He was that kind of guy.
