Oh, the NFC South sure isn't ready. The Falcons live in la-la land and believe they have the best defense in the NFC South. The Saints are still living in an era that happened decades ago, and the Buccaneers are still holding out hope that this will finally be the year their team breaks out...after years of saying it would.

While these jokes of franchises gloat and mope about 'buh-huh-huh Sir Cameron Newton: Leader of Men, Lover of Puppies...Esquire and the Panties hur-hur-hur', the Panthers are silently sharpening their weapons. With an active free agency that still somehow flew under the national media radar, the Panthers are tooling up for one of their best runs yet.

Armed with a defense that's solid in stone, with nearly no holes anywhere. Armed to be the NFC South's juggernaut of power, with one of the league's deadliest front sevens. With a secondary of experience and ball-hawking blood, this defense is about to become something special.

Leading the pack of monsters is the return of Julius Peppers.

Julius Peppers has not had the weapons that we have on our defense in Green Bay recently, yet he produced 7.5 sacks. Imagine what he could do with Short, Addison, Butler, and Charles Johnson all being threats to rush the passer?

With people getting after the quarterback everywhere, what's not to say Julius Peppers will still shine at the ancient age of 37?

Sure sure, this is the past after all. He's not in his prime anymore, but he's still a physical beast. He'll still be very productive and powerful with our deadly rotation.

For those who still believe the past is in the past and Julius Peppers couldn't possibly achieve such level again, watch what he can still do against Matt Ryan:

That was just last year. As an OLB. At his age. Putting a guard on wheels. Like he weighed 50 lbs.

Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, and Jameis Winston are currently filling out their retirement forms as we speak.

You're a party pooper.

Even so, rationally speaking, Julius Peppers does provide a substantial upgrade to our defense. He still was productive in Green Bay, so he'll still be formidable to go against even in his situational role.

Considering our moves we made in free agency, we have a solid defense on paper with no holes anywhere. What should be unlocked is our pass rush and coverage in every facet of our game. We have a formidable defense I'm confident will be top 5 in the NFL next year at the very least.

He will improve with an improved supporting cast around him, even at his ripe old age. Sure, it won't be as hard or flashy as his past dominance, but he still adds ability to our defensive front no matter how you look at it.

Even so, our front is deadly for next year. Can't argue that.

I think our defense being old is an overrated assumption. Our secondary's young and promising. Our DTs are hitting their prime. Our LBs - aside TD - are still relatively young. Our DEs are old, but experienced, and we should be drafting some more of those this year as well.

What matters though is next year's lineup is looking solid, and our future should be assured within these next two drafts.

Pep is not the Pep that left years ago ... He's more like the Jared Allen we got two years ago ... Great but far from his prime ... We have no room to gloat ...

If we lose J. Stew next year our defense will be on the field 24/7 ... and its hard to be great when your on the field more than a Chip Kelly's defense ..

I agree with you. We have all the pieces in place on D for this year. Yes, some of these guys are long in the tooth, but if they can stay healthy and we add one or two young guys in the draft, we should be very good.

Age will probably require some roster shuffling after 2017, but we can worry about that when the time comes.

      KC has a very good defense this year. It is 5th overall. Yes, still worse than last year, but their offense is considerably worse. Their passing D may be their "weakness" but they still allow fewer than 20 ppg. BY completed several deep passes yesterday, and he was able to threaten downfield in ways he didn't seem capable of before the benching. I'm not necessarily worried about his ability to connect deep anymore. What to me was impressive was that he did all this without a run game. We used the pass to set up what little running success we had. Wild.

      Solid and fair assessment.   I will say, one of the big things I noticed yesterday was that he wasn't shy to step up into the pocket in the face of pressure.  He's trusting the IOL.  And they took care of Chris Jones yesterday.  We had clean pockets but also good success rate vs. pressure which just hasn't been the case with Bryce.   If he has more confidence the OL gets it done and he can navigate and step up for throws, that's huge.  It's one of the biggest things that's held him back.  He was previously bailing quickly and just too easily throwing away or making dead plays.     He was finding his 2nd to 3rd reads within structure/without bailing in the pocket.  That was nice to see, as much concern I have with him.  And the overall limitations will always be there. Time to back it up this week against the Bucs.

      Suddenly the Cowgirls look like our best chance for a win remaining. I think the Bucs are playing better than the Falcons of late.  Our lone game versus the dirty birds is in the ATL where we always struggle.  The Cardinals are marginally better than I thought they would be. We are not beating the Eagles, they are starting to roll. I'm saying two at most, next week at home versus the Bucs and the Cowgirls.
