Lieutenant Winslow was supposed to revolutionize the game.... I would steer clear of a TE in the first round

Jake Butt in the 3rd-4th round.... he's a clone of Olsen

Jake Butt is not nearly as fast as Olsen, or as athletic. His ceiling might just be Howard's floor.

I have no problems with this pick. I feel like DG is setting up for this or a wr. I also think we will draft Obi with our first second round pick and Tanoh with our second second round.

There is no way I would have considered taking a TE at 8 coming off of the season we had and the deficiencies we had at S, DL, OL, CB and RB. We already have an all-pro player at the TE spot and he's under contract for the next couple of years.

That said, I think you're on to something. Kalil (hopefully) will address the LT problem. We've got 8 guys under contract on the DL. We've picked up WR's (although we have no idea how they'll pan out). We've signed a veteran to man the SS spot. It does look like G-Man could be planning on taking an offensive player at #8.

I wouldn't do it, but I could see Howard going at 8 if he's there. I'd pick Fournette over him if I had to choose between them because of the offense we run. I just don't think our current coaching staff would effectively use Olsen and Howard together. With solid blocking, I could see Fournette having a huge rookie season; especially if he shares carries with J.Stewart

Normally I would agree that our staff wouldn't use him right, but Igo has said, last offseason Shula was screaming for another TE. I think he has a plan for a two TE set.

Well, if you're right about that, then this is one time I hope I'm wrong. If Shula could use Olsen and Howard as good as Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez were used in NE before the latter TE started murdering people than I'd be all for it.  I don't care how good a defense is, you still have to outscore people to win the game.

I just don't want to us pick a TE at #8 and the staff ends up playing sparingly like Shaq Thompson was used in his rookie year (and even now at times). Shaq is a great player and all, but we didn't "need him" at OLB the year he was drafted.  We could drafted someone else for a more immediate impact. He's viewed as a replacement for guy who is still playing at a very high level (T. Davis). I don't want a repeat of the same situation with Olsen and Howard.

Sorry about the all of the bold print. I only wanted to highlight part of my post, but I can't get it to turn off now.

The problem is solid run blocking..if we do not get line help then it will do us no good to get fornette..this is where howard comes in ..he is a good run blocker..i know fornette is good but without a line he is probably going no where stuck like stewart was last yr...We do not need a beast at rb..i do believe stew can handle the load with better blocking ...we do need another rb tho to give stew a break...I just see howard having more value to the offense. We can get another TE but will he upgrade the offense in 3 different ways that howard is suggesting.

Howard could be the pick.  Right now, we have a lot of solid pieces, but we haven't seen how our new additions will gel and work with our returning players.  We need guys who can score touchdowns.  We need pass rushers.

So at 8, we need to find someone who can help us score on offense or pressure the QB on defense.  Howard can help in the run game because he's already an acceptable blocker by NFL standards.  He also gives another mismatch tool in the pass game.  He's a big man who can move and catch balls (and weights!).  How do you defend against KB (assuming he's hungry and ready), Olsen, Howard, Stewart, and Cam?  You can have a lot of fun with those formations and how guys move around inside the 20 yard line.  Everyone hits the play action but KB is running deep?  Chuck it up.  They play deep?  run Stewart.  Olsen or Howard against a LB or Safety?  Throw it to them.  Everyone runs deep leaving Cam to beat the DL?  let Cam take off.

While I can understand the arguments against Howard, I would still be thrilled if he was the pick for these kinds of match up problems.  The NFL is a match up league now, and he helps create problematic match ups.

He's playing in the spring league at last report, trying to get back into the NFL with Hardy and Manziel.
