Then the Panthers have to trust that Cleveland won't select Howard at 8 and instead take a QB because Hue Jackson and his staff coached him at the Senior Bowl and liked what they saw.

I think Howard is a solid guy for sure, but he is not like a 4.4 guy and would not be that great in all schemes.  I do think he would fit great in our scheme, if we run the same offense.  I don't see him ever being the downfield threat that Olsen is at this point, at least not by himself.  Now, if running him and Olsen in an offense, then maybe so

I agree with your statement that he would be a good fit here. However, OJ Howard fits all 32 teams, Greg Olsen himself said that after watching him do drills at the combine. He can line up inside, outside, or in the backfield. Also, Howard is a better deep threat than Olsen in terms of getting yards after the catch. Greg is fast and run great routes to get open but I have seen him get tackled 20 times at the 1 yard line.  4.51 is very fast for a 250 pound TE, most LBs and S that he will go up against are probably slower than that.

Greg is just as fast and a bit bigger

In a 2 TE offense with Greg, I think Howard would have many more highlights early on, than just getting drafted by the Browns and being the one (go to) TE.

I'd be thrilled with Howard.  He adds a weapon and a dimension to our team.  He's also a long term replacement for Olsen.  All indications are that he's about as safe a pick as you can make.  He'll only make your team better.

But at the same time, we all know that "safe" picks are rarely that.

Though, I'd love to see him come out and us run a base 2 TE set.  Run, pass, confuse from that formation.

bruh...

watch the vid on NFL.com

when asked who his pro comparison is..  he says GREG OLSEN

edit: someone you build your offense around    gave major pros to Greg

I need to learn to not fly off the handle then just reading quotes.

Its like kicking Ed McMahon's ass for being on my porch not knowing he's there to give me a million dollars.

Awkward. Thanks broseph.

Definitely. Howard working with Olsen will accelerate his development. While Howard will extend Greg's career. Olsen as he ages will work underneath while Howard works the seams.

Thinking BPA, I prefer OJ Howard over any defensive end in this class. If Adams, Hooker, and Fournette are gone I'll be ok with that pick. Plus we all know what happened when Cam had two competent TEs to throw to.

That's the issue at hand however. As a prospect, Howard looks the part but will he ever be the TE that Greg Olsen is at the moment. Probably not. Olsen was the best TE in football last year and second best in the last two seasons. I can fault Howard for being a prospect simply because the hype is overly hyperbolic now. Greg gets open because his route running is the best in the league at his position and as you put it "savvy as poo". When Olsen came out of Miami, TEs still weren't considered that crucial to offenses like they were now. In fact, Olsen was considered a hybrid because of his blocking. Some scouts viewed him as a WR. So, yes, now look at him. It took Greg years to finally hone his craft.

Howard hasn't taken a snap in the NFL yet and wasn't a main staple in Alabama's offense unless there was a breakdown in coverage. Notice how Clemson actually did a good job in shutting him out when the safeties were disciplined in the rematch. Howard got a good chunk of his yardage on one play. So I can't possibly view Howard as some monstrous and generational talent just because he's a mismatch weapon.

PFF and SPARQ both analyzed his game and made those comments. It all depends on where he lands. With us, he'll be another Funchess. A more athletic one but a Funchess nononetheless. Shula is NOT Chud. Even if by some asinine miracle we lose out on Thomas, Hooker, Adams, Allen, Fournette, etc AND forget who is running our offense, he'd just be underutilized here too since our #2 TE sees less snaps than our #1 TE and blocks majority of the time.

If we go with this settlement we might as well not draft anyone on offense because they will not be utilized properly..As I recall Shula stated his offense was about the same as Chud that is why they chose him he only added the read option plays to it...Shockey left before Shula became the OC..We have been searching for a 2nd TE every since but never in position except for last yr to really get one...Maybe Shula has been handicapped when it comes to the skills position to make the offense great.this yr I believe he will get what he wants and if it doesnt work he will be gone.

So those who have a better idea than myself, what are we looking at with Howard? The next Gronk? Graham? Olsen?

Howard himself said Olsen when asked at the combine and the majority of people will say the same thing
