PFT - LT Matt Kalil: Structured As A 1 Year Trial Deal

For those of you who still don't really understand Matt Kalil's contract, well ProFootballTalk just clarified a lot.

It turns out there's a supposed 'One Year Trial' Period that effectively turns this into a one year deal. Rather than guaranteeing him throughout the full length of his contract, he has one year to prove himself whether he earns the rest of the contract or get cut for little penalty.

Touted as a five-year, $55.5 million contract, the deal signed last week by tackle Matt Kalil in Carolina is actually a one-year contract with a chance for Kalil to unlock the balance in 2018.

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, the Panthers have to decide between the first and fifth day of the 2018 league year whether to exercise a $10 million option bonus for 2021, with a $10 million non-exercise fee for 2018. The only way to avoid the option bonus or the fee is to cut him or trade him before the deadline for exercising the option.

For now, the deal pays out $13 million for one year, with a $1 million guarantee in 2018 that surely is subject to offset.

While that’s a lot to pay Kalil for one season, it gives the Panthers a clear out in the event that, after paying $13 million in 2017, they decide not to give him another $11 million in 2018. The incentive to do so comes from a more affordable $7 million salary in 2019. Also, salaries of $10 million in 2020 and $10.5 million in 2021 may seem to be a lot less daunting if the salary cap keeps going up $10 million or more per year.

Not that bad of a deal when everything comes into focus, and clearly shows that there's more to a contract than the front page.

EDIT: He edited the article. Apparently supposed to be better than before.

At first blush, the contract signed by tackle Matt Kalil in Carolina doesn’t look as good as advertised, thanks to an error in the summary prepared by the NFLPA. With the accurate information, it’s a far better deal.

The mistake appears in the fully-guaranteed 2018 base salary, which per NFLPA records is $1 million. Per a source with knowledge of the deal, it’s actually $11 million.

The face of the contract shows that the $11 million salary drops to $1 million once a $10 million option bonus is exercised in 2018.

So Kalil will get $24 million fully guaranteed at signing. And as a practical matter the Panthers can move on after giving him $24 million over two years, because after that it essentially becomes a year-to-year contract.

Sure. You can cut him with a 9.6M cap hit going into an off-season where we are going to need a lot of it..

Anyway, I'm done. Who knows what the next report will say. Like most, I just hope he plays well wand shuts me up. I fully expect the next report that comes out to say Kalil will plays for Pez his first year, and then become part owner in 2020.

Oh good another marty kalil contract thread

Not a surprise, really.  The talk is not going to go away anytime soon.

This signing will probably be one of the defining free agency moves in Panthers history so far given our dire straits at LT.  If Kalil is no good, Dave is in hot water, even if he can get out of the contract without too much pain after one year.  Bringing back Pep & Captain are great stories, but the Kalil trade is THE key Panthers offseason move.  Much of our 2017 success is going to hinge on how this plays out.  (Though a healthy Oher could lessen the "make or break" nature of this deal.)

Buuuutttttt.....Gettleman is an idiot, I heard it on (insert sporting news program)....

Man, that's a great contract for us.  If he pans out, he's already on the books for a reasonable amount for a starting LT in the NFL.  If not, we have an out, and we just lost a season.  He also gets $13 million to try it out, and if it works out, he's got a nice contract.  We lose a little bit in the whole deal, but having that one year flexibility is super useful!
