I think the fact that we have multiple threads saying different things about the contact is just proof that NFL contracts are smoke and mirrors.

I'm glad I'm not negotiating them.

Ummm, IDK about this if I am actually reading this correctly.....

  • We pay Kalil $13M in 2017
  • We pay Kalil $11M in 2018
  • If he isn't up to par, we cut him after '18 and are off the hook for future long-term cap problems

So, we are paying him an average of $12M/year for the next 2 years??  IDK....that's pretty steep for a guy with Kalil's history.  I do think if anyone can turn it around, it's Matzko... along with Norwell and Ryan to help. But still, that's a helluva gamble given DG's usual negotiations with free agents. Really hitched his horse to Kalil as the future LT.  I hope everything works out for Kalil here and we do have our franchise LT of the future.

FWIW, I would have preferred Kelvin Beachum at LT (3 yr/$24M) or possibly even Okung (same contract as Kalil).

In that scenario, we would have at least 7.2M in dead money heading into 2019.

Kinda goes with what I was saying in the other thread, a snip:

That effectively means the deal is a fully guaranteed 2-year deal of $24M; followed by a 3-year, $31.5M deal with only the 2019 base of $7M guaranteed (injury only, fully guaranteed if not cut before third day of league year in 2019).

Credit to Person though, seems he was the only one who got the details right (or, close) initially.

Eh, at least its not as crazy as Taylor's  former contract with the Bills. And isn't a long  term strangle hold on us if MK sucks. If he has no options, then its a contract you can stomach even if better options were possibly there.

At least its front loaded this year, but peeved his cap number likely affects star and kk. Year 3 of his contract will be another interesting year if internal extensions.

Look, I like the college player, and even year 1 guy, but 4 years of blah and puke afterwards, still think its a pay based on a lot of past production and little on recent production. Its a gamble. And even if he has better interior help, it doest negate the outside rush being his responsible with Williams over on the right side. Oher isn't the RT you want if you pride yourself as running team unless we dump Shula and go WC which we are not suited for. That means Williams, like Remmers, will likely have to get the most help. Matt will still need to prove he can keep the edge without help.

Whitworth vs Kalil for 2 years, I go Whitworth  9 out of 10 times. The only redeeming part if this deal vs Whit is if Matt plays like his rookie year, you found huge value in 2019 thru 2021. Else give me 2 years of Whitworth with these other win now moves.

Is summary its much better than 1st reported. Solid B as likely only little over $ for a guy that has played at a high level and still young . The reasons its a B not a C are the following: we are only on hook for 2 years minimum and the great back end of the deal if he returns to form. Potentially A+ if you get the pro bowl guy back.  I would have gone harder at Whitworth even if it tied more $$ up front and guaranteed money this year, based on the other moves.
