Matt Kalil's 2017 Cap Hit Is 26th Among LTs

For those of you looking at Matt Kalil's contract and assuming it's a terrible deal, look again.

Matt Kalil's cap hit for 2017 is only at 3.4 million total. Not much of a huge snag at all by all means.

To go further in depth, I'll use Joseph Person's recent breakdown on the contract, as it appears to make more sense and showcase a better deal than originally reported by OTC.

Quote

The Carolina Panthers made a $55.5 million bet on left tackle Matt Kalil, whose five-year contract includes $24 million in guaranteed money over the first two seasons.

Kalil, the No. 4 overall pick by the Vikings in 2012, received a $12 million signing bonus from the Panthers, according to a copy of his contract parameters obtained by the Observer

...

Kalil has guaranteed salaries of $1 million and $11 million in his first two seasons in Charlotte. His $11 million base in 2018 is nearly identical to what he made in 2016 in his final season in Minnesota.

Kalil’s $7 million salary for 2019 is guaranteed if he’s injured, and fully guaranteed if he’s on the roster on the third day of the 2019 league year. He has base salaries of $10 million in 2020 and $10.5 million in 2021, when Kalil will be 32.

Kalil’s contract is comparable to that received by former Detroit tackle Riley Reiff, another member of the 2012 draft class who will replace Kalil with the Vikings.

Reiff received a five-year deal worth $58.75 million, with $26.3 million in guarantees. Reiff’s $11 million signing bonus is slightly less than Kalil’s.

Kalil gets a $400,000 bonus any year he makes the Pro Bowl.

Beginning next offseason, he’ll receive $250,000 a year in workout bonuses, matching the workout incentive in his brother’s Panthers deal.

Not that bad from what is being broken down. Now, I know that Joseph Person isn't always reliable, but if this contract breakdown is true, that's a really good deal for Matt Kalil.

Don't worry or fret so much over Matt Kalil's initial looking contract. It's broken down in a very good way.

Can someone tell me, are there guarantees past this year? If we play him all year and he's horrible can we move on easily and make it basically just a one year 4mil or whatever deal? If so this is an amazing deal with basically a prove it year. Otherwise, this year's cap hit isn't such a huge deal if we're on the books for a lot in the future anyways.

He has a 12m signing bonus that needs to be accounted for so after this year cutting him would cost roughlyou 9.something million.  I don't think there's much that could happen to cut him after 1.

Yes. He has $11M guaranteed next year as well in addition to the $13M we are giving him this year. It's more or less a 3 year, $31M deal. Tough to get out prior to that without a big dead money hit.

Matt Kalil is an upgrade at OT. He is overpaid, but an upgrade. Looks like another Michael Oher type gamble. DG has not been coming up on the right side of those gambles. I hope this one is different. I do like Matt Kalil as a starter though compared to what the Panthers have had under DG's tenure. I just wish it would not take half a decade plus to address the OT position with a young franchise OT.

Guaranteed salary in 11m by way of the guaranteed option bonus that will kick in next off season no mater what. 12 million signing bonus spread out 5 years. He'd cost 20m in dead cap if cut in year 2.

2.4m x 4 + 11m = 20.6m in dead salary if cut.

    • Karlaftis and Danna have been pretty inconsistent so teams have been doubling Jones and able to contain their pass rush.   But the good thing is that yesterday, we schemed well against Steve Spags Defense, Canales married the surrounding personnel with his QB through play designs within his comfort zone and was able to get downfield at will.  He was able to execute higher difficulty throws and look a lot more comfortable.  It tells me that Canales has a good system in mind, and had an edge gameplanning wise against Spagnuolo - which is nice to see.  It's a bit to see-saw at times with either going way too pass heavy or way too run heavy, but I think he's finding out what works.  It takes time to have it come together, and sure, I could see regression happen against a better front-7, but this was good for the entire system gelling.
    • This was evident first two weeks of season. I don’t see any issues with physical tools since he came back. I think he is a player that must play with confidence to overcome those size limitations and he’s doing that.
    • Still 3-10 on passes over 15 yards.  At least he's not scared to merely attempt them anymore.  Where I see improvement is the 10-15 yard range.  He was 6-6.  Bryce of old was scatter shot on anything beyond 10 yards and the further out, the worse the accuracy.
