Shepard contract details

Keep in mind, Ginn was strictly a return man before he came to Carolina. He developed into a received once he got here. I think Gman believes he can do the same with Shepard.

If this guy showed so much promise I don't think the Bucs would've went out and gave D-Jax all that money.

Hopefully he can over-perform and prove me wrong, but I'd prefer that we truly address the WR position rather than waiting on a 2nd round bust to hopefully wake up and trying to fill out the roster with JAGs.

My fear is that this guy represents our efforts to improve the WR corps. Of our top three WRs are KB, Funchess, and this guy... holy fug.

Going to draft one at some point in the 2017 draft, hopefully not 1st

Ginn needed to take some home cooking to stay with Carolina after washing out everywhere else he has been. We had a ton of negotiating power in those talks and it's likely that Gettleman wasn't willing to bend a lot for a 32 year old WR with his track record and naturally declining abilities. My take when I heard he was thinking about free agency was a hearty laugh. They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Ginn wants to chase the money again, let him chase the money again. It's obvious he wants no part of winning if he picked the Saints over us and it's obvious he has no loyalty for us resurrecting his one trick pony status twice. Everywhere else he has been a no-trick pony. I expect much of the same in New Orleans. Just glad it's not us on the hook when his 4.3 speed becomes 4.5 speed and he can't get open to save his life. Father time is undefeated and his awful hands aren't enough to keep him in football when that slip inevitably occurs.

tl;dr to hell with Ted Ginn.

Not even close and that's coming from someone who wanted to see Ginn replaced.

Ginn's ability to field punts (just catching the ball) sadly brought a lot of value to this team. That's not even including teams actually having to game plan for Ginn's speed on offense. I assure you there won't be a single team game planning for the great Russell Shepard on O

I really don't know how you can even think Shepard has anywhere close the value Ginn has

People will gameplan against Charles Johnson as Ginn's replacement. CJ is pretty athletic and fast, and the only reason he's never hit his potential is due to him being stuck in a WC offense with a guy who can't play QB. Plus, Ginn's return skills were pretty bad. Go to any gameday thread and you'll see.

If anything, this could mean we see more of Byrd returning punts. I'd love to see that, unless CJ has return skills as well.

Shepard brings in leadership, skill as a ST ace, and solid route running. Versatile everywhere on the field. He has value in a place where we need ST help, and value as a solid contributor as a WR. They'll respect his skill and what he brings to the table for sure.

I keep reading how Ginn was our best WR over the past 2 seasons and how sad that is. I don't think that our WR core was that bad. I do think that our WR's production was a product of poor offensive play calling and poor protection by the o-line, in addition to average QB play.

It seems to me that we're targeting faster WS's that are more sure handed, which i'm in favor of...

So does this essentially mean we could cut him after this year and only owe him $500k?

Really depends on how that $2.5M is broken out, tweet is pretty vague. If the whole 2017 base salary is guaranteed, then yes, but that $2M signing bonus will be amortized over the contract life so cutting him next season pre-June 1 could cost as much as $1.8M in cap space.

Wow...that's basically the same contract that the Saints gave to Ted Ginn.

Not upset that we signed Shepard.  But I certainly don't understand allocating that money to Shepard over Ginn, given that TG was the best receiver on our team the past two seasons - and he played a key role on special teams.

Has more upside than Ginn, has better hands by default. Embodies are teams slogan.

D-Jax was paid to be a 1B receiver.  Shepard was developing into a decent 4/5 type guy.  So really, they weren't up for the same role.  Basically, he was brought in to fill the Philly role with us, but while also being one of the Top ST guys in the league.  All he is is solid WR depth.  I don't think anybody believes he will be anything more (at least I hope not). Probably a 25-30 catch guy at best.

Johnson was brought in to replace Ginn's speed.  I don't think the staff ever thought Ginn would be our biggest threat at WR, and I really don't think they wanted him to be.  It's a big reason he's gone, IMO. I think Johnson will fill the 3/4 speed receiver role they wanted Ginn to play.  Again, I only expect moderate contributions from him since I believe he'll only be used situationally.

That leaves us with Benjamin, Funchess, and a yet to be brought in guy to fill the #1-3 receiver roles.  And to be honest, I could potentially see two receivers brought in if the right guys are available.  Most likely, we'll take a guy early in the draft to fill one of those roles, and possibly still bring in a guy like Cruz who may not be as dynamic as he once was, but is still a solid #3.
