After Signapalooza, how's our cap?

Until the full contract details come out, we won't know. Oftentimes these initial numbers tossed around come from the player's agent and it's a best case scenario for the player but oftentimes the structure of the contract can show that there are years on the back end of that contract that will almost certainly never actually be paid out.

The cap isn't an issue right now because once KK is extended, a lot of money tied up in the franchise tag will be spread over the 4 or 5 years of the contract in the amount of his signing bonus.

Extending KK will open up another $8-$10 million in 2017 dollars.

I hope we can get Short extended, but at this point I'd be surprised if we do. I think the most likely scenario is that he plays out this season under the tag, we let him walk and take our 3rd round comp pick and Butler is our starting three technique in 2018.

My best estimate is around $5 million or so left in room. If we extend Kalil and Olsen, and reach some kind of injury settlement with Oher, I think we're back up to around 12-17 million. That isn't even counting savings from cutting Andy Lee or Ed Dickson, or extending Turner and/or Lotulelei (moves that I think will happen sometime down the road.)

I don't think we're done in FA.

We will have more room after the draft, there will be some players that either restructure or will be cut between now and June 1st.

a lot will depend on the draft now.

True. I corrected my initial estimate. I think we could have 17-20 million in space if we don't sign anyone else and we cut Lee, Dickson, and some lesser talent/camp fodder, restructure Olsen and Ryan Kalil, and extend Star, Turner, and possibly KK. I think KK will play under the tag this year, though. If we don't do any of that other than Olsen and Kalil, I think we'd be somewhere around 12-15 million, with half of that needed for the rookie pool. That leaves room to still bring in another couple solid FAs.

It was 25.9 Million after re-signing Addison, CJ, Horton,Short and Norwell. Then you have to deduct these deals.

Peppers- 1 year deal. 3.5 to 4.25 cap hit. Depends on if 750k in Bonus money is deemed likely to be earned.

Munneryln- 4 years 21 Million. 10.5 Guaranteed. 6 of which is signing bonus.First year 1 million base salary and 1.5 of singing bounus makes it at least 2.5 cap hit in year 1. Year 1 and 2 probably fully guaranteed.

Kalil 5 years 55 Million. 25 Million guaranteed. Rest of structure not reported yet.

Charles Johnson (WR)

1 year 2.5 Millon

Mike Adams 2 years. Can't find details on money yet

Russell Shepard 3 years. Can't find details on money yet

So 9 million from Peppers,Munneryln and WR CJ. Add a another 2 million for Adams and Shepard and that's 11 Million. I think lowest possible cap hit on Kalil's first year is around 9 Million.

So 5-8 Million left.  For those interested heres the known cap hits from re-signed players

Mario Addison 3 years 22.5 Million. 11.5 Guaranteed. 7.5 paid in first year.

Year 1 cap hit 4.354

Year 2 cap hit 8.9

year 3 cap hit 9.1

Charles Johnson (DE)

2 years 2.5 Guaranteed

year 1 cap hit: 4.359

year 2 cap hit: 3.5

Norwell 1 year tender 2.746 Million

Fozzy 2 year deal.

Year 1 cap hit 1.350

Year 2 cap hit 1.15

Horton ,Jacobs, and Bersin still unknown

Good job. Don't forget Palardy in there too. I think his hit is like $1.794 mil, and the fact that we tendered him at that, to me at least, means Lee is probably gone (which will save us like $3 million.)

Thanks, forgot about him. The 25.9 million was before obtaining any outside free agent's. I believe we signed 5 total right? Well thanks to the top 51 rule, that means that 5 of these 540k cap figures fall off our books for accounting purposes.  That is 2.7 million alone right there and enough to effectively wash out Captains 2017 cap hit.

I'm sure we will sign a few more players and each time they will knock another 540k to 615k cap hit off the books.

I think we still will try to resign him next year but both parties are happy to see what happens. KK will not have any excuses this year. On both sides of the line we have pass rushers who can get to the QB and demand respect. So if he disappears like last year we will let him walk if he's talking 17 mill like this year.

    • It's Thielen.   BTW, Thielen is the perfect model for him to follow.
    • Bigcat at Barstool was talking about Purdy and said he’s a guy you win with. Not a guy you win becasue of. Like Allen, Jackson, Mahomes, and Burrow. I’m all for Bryce being our QB the next 2 years, but you can’t go out there a pay him like a top 12 QB when we become a .500 ball club.
