Which DE is worth a shot in this years draft

Ppl who tout Taco have seriously not seen Taco play and only look at the measurables..

I'm a big UM fan and found myself on many Saturdays asking "Where the fug is Taco"..

He showed up vs O-state and FSU this year which is why his draft stock is high (2 games we lost) but he was constantly being question about effort...

Think about what Gettleman raves about when talking about prospects. It's never workout numbers, it's rarely production, but it's often physical measurements. Height, weight, wingspan, hand size, etc. I'm not a huge fan of putting so much emphasis on physical measurements. Sure, in the ideal world you have a roster stacked with ideal athletes at every position, but when you focus so heavily on ideal size you can end up missing out on the Steve Smiths, Dwight Freeneys, etc. of the world. I'd prefer we look at the full picture but I get the feeling that if a prospect doesn't have ideal size he gets downgraded in Gettleman's mind - especially at certain positions. Seems like he really wants his linemen and receivers to be ideal to plus size.

I so hope this isn't true.. You would miss out on alot of great players with this thinking.

Some teams have positional minimums. For example, if a CB  isn't at least 5'10" he's not even on their draft board. I have no idea if the Panthers have a system like that in place but it wouldn't shock me.

When scouting a player your main reference point is the tape..

You use college production to verify the tape..

You use the combine to either confirm the tape or make you go back to the tape to see if you missed something..

Everything in scouting goes back to the tape..

I also watched a lot of UM games, and went back to look at Taco individually in a few games on Draftbreakdown (highly recommend some of you go watch these guys and really put the the eye test to work). He consistently gets pressure, but the QB would get rid of the ball quick most of the time. Most second halfs when the tackle would have enough they would finally start doubling him also. On third and longs and plays that took time to develop he was in the QBs face consistently like a stud DE should. To say he disappears in games isn't taking into consideration the offense trying to take him out of the game. You can't do that in Carolina with KK needing a attention, and Star also. Not too mention he was stout against the run when they ran to his side..

Again Solomon Thomas was equally impressive watching him, but is he a prototype DE like Taco? That's for Gettleman to figure out. But they are the only two DEs to consider at 8..

If we take a DE I'd rather just wait till the second and take Tanoh Kpassagnon. He has great size, is a decent athlete for that size and produced (albeit against weak competition). If he had played for a big time program he would probably be rated as highly as a guy like Taco(they are basically the same size). Let Tanoh work with and learn from Peppers for a year and then let him just eat tackles alive for the next decade.

I'm going to destroy this whole TACO thing right..

Plain amd simple Taco in college for 4 years only double digit sacks and tackle for loss 1 out of 4 (his Sr. Year). Didn't become a force until Harbough got there..

Barnett in college 3 years  gave you double digits sacks and tackles for loss almost every year..

Meaning Day one on campus this dude was a force no matter who the coach was..

Again look at the tape..

Again look at the production..

This is not even close..

Only problem is you're not making the pick. It will be interesting. I really now think he may wait even to round 3 for DE. Regardless will be very interested to see if everyone is right about Barnett and how he turns out. I reckon there will be higher profile picks than him who turn out bigger busts.

A few tell tell signs ppl..

Look at the difference in highlight videos..

1.Alot of TAco sacks come on blitzes, Dline stunts or with somebody else getting the intial pressure making the QB move in Taco direction..

Many of Barnetts sacks come off of him beating the man infornt of him with just a 4 or 5 man rush and he is usually the 1 providing the intial pressure and getting the sack..

2. Taco highlight film is based off 1 season.

Barnett is a combination of 3..
