Which DE is worth a shot in this years draft

I wonder if after getting burned on Kony Ealy DG will consider motor and heart more than previously when drafting.Yeah, probably not. Its funny that physique is used to knock Barnett considering Thomas is shorter than Barnett and the weight difference between them is negligible. Also that he played a lot inside so isn't a true DE compared to Barnett. They  both had awesome bowl games but somehow only Thomas saw his draft stock rise.

The problem I have with Barnett is that he came into the combine at 259 pounds and he ran a 4.88. I understand that he was sick and will wait and see what he does on his pro day.  Thomas posted similar  10 yard split and 3 cone drills to Myles Garrett but lacks the length and size but he can make it up with his motor and athleticism. Barnett might be looked at as a 3-4 OLB. If the Panthers want a 4-3 prototype end then Garrett and Taco. If they want DE they can also kick in inside then Thomas or Allen if they drop. I want OJ Howard at 8 BTW

That's fair. And I reckon Solomon would be a good player for us. Honestly I'm thinking there must be something I'm missing to explain Barnett's drop in draft stock, but it must be significant so maybe that should be enough to warn us off. I heard that Taco doesn't suit the 4-3 and that he goes missing-which makes me think Ealy. Obviously Garrett won't happen. Then there are the guys later like Willis, Kapasagnon, Walker, who have impressed at the combine and senior bowl. So maybe the smart move is to take the DE later?

I don't know if any of them are worth the 8th pick.

Best pure speed rusher off the edge is Barnett

Thomas, is a talented guy but not sure he has the ability to pressure off the edge. Playing a 3-4 end in college makes it harder to evaluate how he would transition.

Allen, is a beast 3-4 End as well. Same questions about his skill set translating to a 4-3 end.

To me that's the only 3 that can be in play at 8.

Right now I'm still heavily in Favor of Fournette, with Corey Davis being the consolation prize. If not them, then it comes down to whoever the front office likes better between Barnett and Thomas, assuming both are still there.

I need go back and watch more of Adams play but from the little I've seen I don't think he's a top target at 8.

Agree with this. Beginning to think that the only way we will draft Barnett is if we trade back. If Allen is still available we might get a nice deal and still pick mid-first. So even though I don't want Allen I'm hoping he drops...

This is petty much my defense. Get A DE that is raw like how Danielle Hunter was at LSU then believe in your coaches and Vets to develop him. We need day 1 impact on offense

It sounds obvious but it really looks like our board in some order is:

Adams

Fournette

Allen

Thomas

Barnett

Howard

One of the three WRs- Davis, Williams, Ross I can't say for sure if they like any of the WR's enough to take at 8 but I'll throw all three into contention.

Most likely almost all of those guys will be there at 8. So we're going to get the guy we want. It will be very interesting to see the way we go.

Let's say Fournette drops- would not suprise me at all if we happily took him and waited till rounds two or the end of round 1 to take a DE.

I like Barnett, I'm just not sure how Gettleman will feel about him. He's pretty small for a Gettleman DE. Gettleman likes his DEs with prototype size.

Equal to Trey Flowers who made the play of the millennium.  I think GMan more values production and upside (20 years old).

I sit here in confusion sometimes..

Based on Tape and production the best DE in this draft is Barnett..

Based on technic differential in pass rush moves and hand violence the best DE in this draft is Barnett..

Based on facing the best competition relentless effort and performing at a high level the best DE in this draft is Barnett..

Based on how a guy looks in a uniform and performes in underware those other guys..

Plain and simple..

There's a lot I don't know about this game,  and It may surprise people to know that I learn a lot from the huddle. Maybe someone can explain to me the advantages that extra height and weight bring and why people seem to consider it the most important factor in assessing DEs? Is it simply a case of power in the bull rush and being able to bat down balls at the line of scrimmage?

Think about what Gettleman raves about when talking about prospects. It's never workout numbers, it's rarely production, but it's often physical measurements. Height, weight, wingspan, hand size, etc. I'm not a huge fan of putting so much emphasis on physical measurements. Sure, in the ideal world you have a roster stacked with ideal athletes at every position, but when you focus so heavily on ideal size you can end up missing out on the Steve Smiths, Dwight Freeneys, etc. of the world. I'd prefer we look at the full picture but I get the feeling that if a prospect doesn't have ideal size he gets downgraded in Gettleman's mind - especially at certain positions. Seems like he really wants his linemen and receivers to be ideal to plus size.
