Which DE is worth a shot in this years draft

My main point was that it's far less about what you've done and far more about what you're projected to be able to do. Hell, you have former college QBs playing WR.  Lots of former OTs kicking inside to OG. CBs going to S and on and on.

People questioned Thomas' ability to rush the edge because they hadn't seen him do it a lot. Then at the Combine he showed the athletic ability to do it.

And he MAY be able to do it. It's #8 tho, that cannot be lost. I'm pulling for him because I think he seems to be one of the good ones. Edelman wasn't drafted at 8. I'd just prefer we pick a guy at 8 who has proven on the field that he can play the role

Gettlemania will run wild in round 1 and we'll draft Jonathan Allen.

Think about it, DT is the most important position for him and both Short and Star are coming up for big contracts. Gettleman wants to have leverage so there you go.

Wait wouldn't that be Butler thoe

I know everyone seems to like Thomas but I still just don't see a great 4-3 DE when I watch him. I don't see the bend around the corner, I don't see a guy who is going to blow by tackles, I just don't see it. I think he would make a solid UT, or a 3-4 end but he will just be so so as a 4-3 end in my limited knowledge based football opinion.

I think everyone is picturing that RDE getting low and speed rushing around some LT, but what if he is playing as the LDE.  A lot of the times he might be covered up by a tight end so that speed rush around the tackle might not be available.  Also I would think you want some more run support out of your LDE which he is suppose to be really good at.

Of our current defensive ends which just signed the longer contract? RDE or LDE?  I don't really see Barnett playing LDE.

Also I'm not convinced he can't bend and blow by tackles.  Every drill at the combine suggest that he is quicker then someone like Barnett.  As a college 3-4 end he probably wasn't lined up to go around the LT or asked to.  His 3-4 linebacker teammate probably had an alignment more like Barnett's 4-3 allignement.

He is going to be an interesting evaluation.  The measurables suggest that he can be an effective 4-3 end but most of his tape is playing as a 3-4 end.

I don't want Solomon Thomas at 8. That would be a reach imo. If you look at Thomas' lower body it's not impressive, and neither is his arm length, and he's not explosive. He won't be a sack artist, and he's going to have to put on a lot of weight which will slow him down. If Fournette and Thomas are there you RUN to the podium for Fournette, or trade down imo.

In the muck with the pads he doesn't have that explosive pass rush you want from a top 10 DE pick. And he's playing light which is not going to fly in the pros, which I think when you add the weight he'll end of being one of those effort guys. Don't need an effort guy at 8.

He weighs 273lbs, since when is that light for a DE?

It's about what you're going to do in the pros. He's not going to be this great run stuffer at that size, and he's not an explosive pass rusher. So the logical step is to bulk him up to improve his run blocking in the pros, and that can be his thing. He's too light for that right now.
