I don't have an opinion on this but I do wonder how people get hooked on this stuff.  I've taken these same exact pills 3 or 4 at a time (in the past) and they didn't do a great job at alleviating my (back) pain and the narcotic effects were noticeable but hardly the same as pounding 8 beers in a couple of hours.  I'm not trying to be snarky but I have an honest curiosity about how someone goes from that first prescription to being absolutely dependent on these pills.

Try pounding 8 beers after you take a few painkillers.

The pills might not have worked for you but they work for a lot of other people.

Now consider that the guys in the NFL might be in consistent pain all over their body for at LEAST 16 weeks out of the year (more likely at least half the year without any longer term injuries) and the pain pills work for them. So they get used to taking the pills every day in order to just be able to get up and function around the facilities. Then consider that over time the same amount of the drug doesn't work due to tolerance build up so they have to take more and more just to get the same relief they previously had. This is where mental and physical dependency kicks in. That's how they become addicted.

Painkillers are misnamed IMO.

They do little in pain reduction, but they do a lot in increasing your "don't give a poo."

When I was prescribed opiates after a back injury, my back still hurt, but I didn't give a crap about the pain, or really anything undesirable. They even helped me find positives in my wife's crappy "good looking young adult vampire shows" that are generally God awful.

Hell I even thought I sounded like Eric Clapton Unplugged on the acoustic while I was on those meds. Good times.

...maybe I still have some hydros in the night sta............

I think its just access. I, like most , have had narcotics prescribed a few times in life. I actually really like how they make me feel. I would take a little more than I should and a little more often than I should. If they were readily available and cheap or free, I would probably take them frequently - especially if I was banged up all of the time. Look at any player during any game; they are taped up left and right due to injury, not just support tape. They are never 100%.

My cousin is ex-military and like many, has had to have multiple surgeries (shoulders and knees) from his service. His back and hip are screwed up too.  Like you describe, He is on all sorts of pain killers including morphine, just to get through the day. Though, I'm not a smoker, I have no doubt that marijuana would help his problems without destroying his organs like he is doing now. I feel the same way about the NFL.

good for you to never have experienced an addiction of any sort.  Thank your parents.

I'm a disabled combat vet who is on pain management....

The way you get used to it is your brain literally opens up more "gates" to receive the drug....it literally alters your brain chemistry to take in more of the "happy" portion(part that gets you high). So if you take smaller dosages or get a tolerance that's how it leads to depression and stuff like that because all of your brain receptors aren't taking in the "happy".

Been on it for 6 years now...even had the cancer patch for awhile.

Also if they are taking those 5/500's a lot it's pretty stupid because the 500 mg of acetaminophen is really bad if you take a lot often....it's best to use the 5/325 or just straight 5's / 10's. That's what will kill your liver, especially combined with alcohol which we know the NFL athletes don't do.
