Matt Kalil contract details

I understand it's terrible, but this is a big contract hoping he comes back and becomes a franchise LT.

It's a need I'm sure Gettleman is nearly hanging himself for, but it had to be done. Hate to say we overpaid a player for the first time ever.

This is not 'overpaid' for a potential startin left tackle. We probably would have paid similar for a top 10 drafted LT on a 5 year rookie contract.

5 - 8 - 12 - 14 - 16 mil in cap hits each year, or something like that, I bet. That pays off the guaranteed money after the first three years, meaning if he's released or something after that then the other 30 mil doesn't count, and we basically paid him around 8.33 mil a year for three years.

I'm coming to terms this is likely backloaded as crap right now.

It's probably not too bad as far as year to year (hoping its about 7-8 for first two years or something) to lessen the blow.

Gamble had to be made, but I can see Gettleman ticked about this as well. Gotta hope Kalil comes back and turns himself into a name.

Remember guys...Oher is set to make over 7 million this season.  If he retires, Kalil is basically his replacement at 3 million more per year.  If Oher is cleared to play, we have a much improved offensive line.

For those missing out on this, it's a win/win, this will be year 2 of 3 for Oher, so if he returns healthy the OL is set the next couple of seasons.

And if he isn't we re-coup the cap, and Williams is the starter with a draftee to develop.

This. Hence why I'm waiting for the full structure details to come out before drawing a real conclusion. These initial numbers that get put out are often best case scenarios for the player. The devil is always in the details.

Am I crazy for thinking this isn't that bad a contract? Ends up being 5 million a year if he doesn't work out. If he does work out were paying 11 million for a staple at LT. Left Tackles who can play aren't cheap, fellas.

actually not really. If he doesn't pan out lets say after year 2 and we cut him, we still owe him the $25M, plus whatever he's due in year 1 + 2. Lets say hypothetically it's all backloaded and the additional $30M is due in years 3, 4, and 5, that $25M still has to be paid, so in essence it's a 2 year deal worth $12.5M per, and that's the best case scenario assuming he's due nothing else in years 1 and 2.
