Matt Kalil contract details

Elliot's contract at #4 was 4 years $25M with all of it guaranteed.

I really need to see the each year break out to know if this is a good or bad contract. The last couple years are meaningless and can easily be restructured or by that time could be decent deals.

Same.

Oher's contract is structured nicely. We can make him a post June 1st cut and save a ton of money. I'm going to assume that's where Kalil slides in

So that's 5/36M. 25 guaranteed. Same guaranteed money. But that encompasses entire salary for first 4 years. You think Kalil will make less than 15M in base salary over a 5-year period? Not happening.

You're not good at maths are ya? Say the number 5 pick this year is a tackle and after 5 years has 35 million cash (25m guaranteed and a 10m 5th year option).

Given Kalils contract and expected average salary of 7 million a year (25m guaranteed and 2 million/yr average bonuses - factoring injuries and bonus related payments) that's 35 million cash.

Thats IF he plays out 5 years.

Sheesh...shouldn't have consulted any Viking fans on this one. Says he repeatedly has battled knee injuries and that they may even be chronic. Mentioned he doesn't seem to care about football and that it is a 'high risk, low upside signing'. Meh. Hasn't offered much in the run game and is streaky in pass protection.

The "doesn't seem to care about football" is very concerning to me. Is he going to take the 25 mil and pack it in here? I don't think so, but it's a concern. Yea, he's playing with his brother but it's only so long that perk can work to our advantage if his heads not in the game. There's some red flags with this move, but I'm hoping it works out

How is 30M over 5 years going to be an average of 2M/yr in "average bonuses".  His first couple years might be low on base salary, but it's going to be there the last 3 years. And if we cut him early it's 5M/yr penalty. There is no way he is just going to make 2M/yr over the guarantee over the course of the contract.

People are freaking out, because there's no certainty that it'll all play out like the Oher situation. All we have to look at is his previous play, which has been trash. We can't afford for Cam to get hit like he did last year, and we can't afford to waste another prime year of both cam and Luke. Now, if your ok with the move and want to wait and see, then that's cool, but Kalils previous play is plenty reason for people to "panic" and question the move. He's been graded out as one of the worst lineman in the league.

Me, I'm not freaking out, but I understand the reasoning of the people that are.

I guess I've just never understood the thought process that people have to panic at things beyond their control because they fear a result that hasn't even happened yet.

My wife does it all the time and it absolutely boggles my mind.
