The WR Situation

Recommended Posts

Until we know what's playing out and if we re-sign anyone else, this is our current WR group (seriously, it's just these 4 currently):

Kelvin Benjamin

Devin Funchess

Keyarris Garrett

Mose Frazier

Yikers.

Now the position has had less attention this offseason on our end for a mix of reasons, whether it's lack of draft talent or an average FA class; but I'm getting the feeling we're going to do something here.  I actually have faith in Funch and KB turning a corner this next season but if I'm being honest, we need someone who can instantly be a go-to slot receiver or one that will instantly fit ahead of Devin on the depth chart.  Now the question I'm posing: Is it more likely to happen through FA or the draft?

FA:

Jackson (Rumored to sign with TB), Woods, Stills, Marshall, Jeffery, Cruz, Garcon, Pryor, Kendall Wright, Marcus Wheaton, a lot of guys who could fit in.  Hell, I'd be willing to take a flyer on Quinton Patton or Andrew Hawkins as well.  We have barely any one at the position right now so we're adding talent somehow.

Draft:

I have some faves (Taywan Taylor, Josh Malone, Amarah Darboh) and there's good talent.  Just nothing eye-popping

--

So--Does anyone see talent in this class beyond the first few rounds?  Outside of that, with the draft talent performing this week, getting a legit UFA is something that shouldn't be lost.  Cam needs a go-to outside of Greg and can't get lost in staring contests with KB.

I would loved for us to get Woods but think it's a shot in the dark if Stills demands the money that we heard about.  (11-12 mil/yr).  In this case, someone like Kendall Wright or Pierre Garcon could be legitimate possibilities that aren't really being discussed.

Figured to open this up to WR talk.  We are really thin.  What's a feasible WR corps we could expect next year?

First off, you all are undervaluing Kelvin while he was hurt this season. Proehl already said his knee began swelling and bothering him after the 49ers, and only got better the last two games of the season.

In the 4 games KB was healthy, he was dominant. He teared through the league's best secondary game one, so I don't have worries about him when he's healthy.

Funchess though does need to improve, but I believe it's Shula not giving him much of a chance moreso than not. He just needs to transcend from TC warrior to gameday beast.

Ginn will sign back. He should've learned his lesson already, and will come back if he wants time.

We're getting a slot receiver though. Gettleman already proved that through draft comments and interest in Cruz. Either through the draft or FA, we're getting one.

Don't sleep on Damiere Byrd either. Played well when given chances in Tampa and looked the part. Expect him to be used more.

First. Do not bring back Bersin and Brown, I will repeat this in every post concerning the offense or WR position. Team needs a slot WR that is quick, runs good routes, and has solid hands. I say look at Robert Woods or Victor Cruz in FA and then Ryan Switzer and Zay Jones in the draft.

bersin checks off great route running, and great hands so why are you hating? Not to mention he will play for nothing.

Not hating, after 3 years it's time to cut bait and bring in another WR with  a higher floor and upside.

I second the sentiment about Shula not utilizing Funchess in the most effective fashion. Also, I saw Funchess open quite a few times where Cam could have hit him for a good gain but he didn't see him and just threw it to another receiver. I still believe Funchess really has the potential to be a great receiver when utilized correctly.

Yeah, I won't dispute what you said about KB and DF but at the end of the day, they're the entire crew at the moment plus some PS guys.  We're making some type of move, so that's the premise, what will that be.  Not disputing KB or Devin.  We basically have 2 WRs who are both coming off questionable seasons.  I will admit, KB soured on me and I think there are legit things that transcend his being banged up.  Quick example: The Minnesota game was really frustrating

Also--I just don't think it's cut and dry Ginn is back.

The last point to go against: I'll choose to sleep on Byrd for now.  He's looked good when given the chance but it doesn't look like they're going to give him that chance and I not interested in another annual hyping of a WR.  Biddle, Brown, Hill, Garrett, King, etc., I'm not going in with any expectations there.

Would love to see us go after Woods. I think he'd be a great fit for us. He can play the slot and he can play outside and he's been a consistent performer on a team that hasn't had much of a QB or an offense in general. He's also a very good run blocker for a WR.

I think we have a stud in KB. He's never going to be great at creating separation and he's probably always going to have some head scratching drops, but they guy goes after the ball hard and can make catches that very, very few other guys can.

I wish I was as confident in Funchess but I'm not. I just haven't seen much on gameday to make me very confident. Hope he develops, but I'm at the point with him that IMO in terms of the roster we probably shouldn't be counting on him developing.

Would like to see Ginn brought back on a team friendly contract. He is what he is, but he's a dangerous deep threat.

Give me a Woods type FA and them give me a draft pick, hell maybe even two. I don't love the top of this WR draft class but I do love the depth.
