Thinking of joining the military

Have you considered joining the Coast Guard?

Just before I decided to go to law school, I have considered doing the select reserve direct commission for prior enlisted personnel. Being a Sergeant in the Marine Corps is one thing and I enjoyed my time but I wouldn't mind being a Lieutenant close to my home.

I haven't given the Coast Guard much thought honestly. Sounds like too much staying at home. Enlighten me?

for political reasons i would personally advise against joining at all. knowing what harm the american military industrial complex causes across the world i would be very hesitant to voluntarily be a part of it.

however, every nation needs a standing army, so you can't just be all rah-rah anti-military and not have one, so there's an equal case to be made for joining the service and lobbying to change it from within.

some of the best human beings i know served in the military. you will be surrounded with incredible people whose friendships you will value for life.

finally - OCS is an absolute bitch, but well worth it when you're drawing officer pay, and mopping up parking lots in the rain ends when you're finished with OCS.

good luck whatever you decide!

Go officer in the Air Force. Training is a breeze, the assignments are head and shoulders the best in the Military, and you will basically be a civilian wearing the uniform.

I've always had interest in the military too, I have the utmost respect for the men who have served.  I'm gonna graduate in 1.5 years with a bachelors degree.  Is that what you need to become an officer in the Air Force?  A bachelor's?  If so, what kind of job would I be looking at?  I'm interested as well.

Any more info would be sweet

What kind of degree will you have when you're done?

Also, forgot to mention, what is your GPA and OP what is your GPA? That is also taken into consideration.

Good luck to you on serving your country. As I have two 19-year old twin nephews in the Air Force joined back last summer. As well as a soon to be nephew in law in the Army ready to get out after four years. And my father did nine years in the Air Force and late grandfather on my mom's side, In WWII one of the greatest generations.

@h0llywood

Let me clarify a few more things.  I still absolutely plan on teaching one day, I have a passion for education and want to impact the lives of the youth.  I'm beyond stoked to have my own classroom one day.  But I don't want to just have this boring life of working 30 years, retiring and just calling it a day.  I think the military would challenge me in more ways than one, and build me into a better person and eventually a better teacher.  I just haven't been faced with much adversity in life so far.  Grew up with parents who do pretty damn well and are paying for my education, never had to work for very much.  Doesn't mean I'm entitled, I'm blessed if anything just something about me wants more and wants to be challenged.  I also have a very serious GF that I have every intent to spend forever with, so if I ever actually went through with it she would have to be on board and idk if she would.

I wouldn't want to spend more than 10 years.... I don't think anyways.  What kind of routes can I take if I don't want it to be more than a 10 year thing?  I'll admit I haven't done much research, I'll do more if I continue thinking about it.  Maybe this will help you provide me more information

Without looking into specific branches, is there a specific branch you're looking into? Also i believe there are programs that pay off your student loans but ill look more into that. Officer commisions usually are 6 years but again ill verify that.

Great thing you will get are the benefits once you get out. Not only can you obtain a masters while in the military, you can then go to school after (phd) using VA benefits.

I was thinking AF or Navy, and 6 years is fine that's right in the range of time I would want to serve unless I just completely fall in love with it.  But doing research I don't know what jobs I'd be ready to handle as an officer with a measly History degree.

And yeah, I definitely want to get a masters.  Not having to use loans to pay for it would be super clutch.

my family has a rich military history as well. both paternal great grandfathers fought in WWII, one on the 2nd wave at Normandy (US Army) and the other on both Okinawa and Saipan (US Marines). my Dad's father was an active duty Guardsman just before Vietnam. My Dad @Superadiabatic tried to join the Air Force as a meteorologist, but couldnt go for medical reasons. On my mother's side, i have a great uncle who was a submariner in the 80's, an uncle who is currently in the US Army serving in Germany, and a great grandfather who also served in WWII, though i dont remember where he served.

suffice to say, the tradition is there. I appreciate your support!

Very similar to why i am joining FuFu. just replace "teacher" with "linguist". lol. Good luck to you!

USMC has a dual enrollment program that allows you to knock out OCS while finishing your degree and then get your commission as a 2nd lieutenant at your graduation. standard infantry route requires 4.5 years, which includes your six month basic school, but there are benefits to going six years as well. if you wanna fly it's an automatic six years.

bust ass and you could get out at captain, especially if you excel in a specific field. i got in as a history major as well. the officer selection office is in raleigh and it's worth calling up to make an appointment if you'd like to explore your options.

This is definitely interesting and something I'll further explore, I just really, really don't know if I have what it takes for the Marines. I hate sounding like a little b*tch, but marines just seem to be a different breed. I don't know if I'm cut out for it or not

i did okay, but in retrospect i'm glad it didn't work out. i completed OCS and was poised to get my commission but i tore cartilage in both knees, had twin arthroscopic surgeries, and got booted from the program so the corps wouldn't have to pay for them. i rehabbed the knee but slowly started going in different directions and decided it wasn't the career i wanted.

it's weird to think how different my life track would be if i hadn't fuged up my knees, but i'm pretty happy things turned out the way they did. think long and hard before making your decision!
