Which definitely explains why Cruz was brought in for a visit almost immediately?

We are going to add to the WR position this offseason.

hey, maybe i'm crazy... but I don't see Cruz as being a huge signing.  I think he would take the role of Brown if he's signed (albeit, potentially doing it better, but that's still not a huge signing in my book)

i'm talking about all this alshon/djax/etc chatter... that's the big type of signing I just don't see happening

Yeah we definitely won't be going after an Alshon type guy....but Cruz definitely fits the mold as a slot guy who can take on that Cotchery role that was missed this year.

I agree, while Gettleman certainly has not given up on KB and Funch he isn't going to go into the season with only the guys on the roster. We're adding a veteran, someone through the draft or possibly both.

there's your "vet receiver" in the film room... without signing a new receiver to the roster

don't see any other big WR moves this offseason

Cool, now we can focus on Philly, Byrd, and the draft and keep that FA $ where it belongs; resigning Norwell, and extending Star and Trai. If CJ, Ginn, Remmers, Scott and Love want to resign on the cheap, I'm cool with that too.

My first thought when I read this was "Don't we already have an assistant receiver coach?"

I don't know of too many teams that have an assistant quarterback coach. But then again most teams probably don't have a former scout as their primary quarterback coach.

This is interesting considering that Proehl stepped down.  Maybe Cotchery has more of the coaching chops?  No one ever doubted Ricky's knowledge, but I wonder if he wasn't hard enough on Funchess and Benjamin?  Maybe too buddy-buddy for them to really be pushed?

Cotchery is also a very knowledgeable former player.  More brains in the room won't hurt.  Especially as the new WR coach coached college RBs (not sure how that makes sense as a transition?).  Or is it that the new coach will be the discipline and Cotchery will be the knowledge?  And there might be more plans for the WR coach in the future?

Or am I completely full of poo?  (Maybe?)

It may have been a stretch for Lance to coach RBS but not receivers. He was a receiver in college and played for Shula, was in Cotchery 's position under Proehl and has worked for other college and NFL teams. He has the knowledge and experience to do the job. What we wanted with Cotchery is a proven slot receiver who can mentor whoever we bring in as a slot receiver and perhaps expand the role of running backs working in the slot. He did a great job with McCaffrey at Stanford last year.

I feel educated =)

Regardless, hopefully we can get better production out of our WRs for 2017!

I love the hire and this might give us a clue to drafting choices...
