Didn't see this in any of the beat reporters' tweets.  But at the very end of a short article at BBR about the situation with Oher and Dave's comment that they've got a plan, there was this intriguing comment:

"Free agency is to set up the draft and I want to put us back in that spot."

Hmmmm..  "put us back in that spot".... am I reading too much into it, or is that a slightly subtle acknowlegement that perhaps DG realizes he didn't do enough in FA last year to set up the draft?  Sounds a bit like that to me...

Yes. I think DG has admitted such a couple times now. He knows he didn't play the cards very well offseason. He even admitted to not being immune to making mistakes when he said something like. "At the end of the day as long as I make more good decisions than bad ones we will be fine"

Good catch ...also could be a little bit of an admission that he messed up with Norman ..was then forced to draft the way they did .

Here's a bit more from Gettleman about Fournette and the RB class in the draft via BBR:

http://blackandbluereview.com/wasnt-clear-already-panthers-eyeing-running-backs-2017-draft/

Quote

"Big running backs are nice. They tend to run people over better than 180-pound running backs," Gettleman said with a smile.

"It's a deep running back group, we know that. It'll be interesting to see how the whole process plays out because we're really just halfway through it."

Dave Gettleman: "240 lb running backs are nice. They can run more people over than a 180 lb back."

So, we just going to ignore this?

Fournette is such an obvious choice for us if there. However, Coughlin a former mentor to DG will likely snag him for the jags.

And another DG quote on the RBs and what he's looking for, from that same BBR article.

Quote

"Obviously you're looking for vision and you're looking for feet. You're looking for hands, you're looking for blitz pickup," Gettleman said of scouting young backs.

"I've said this before — one of the toughest things for these running backs coming in is the blitz pickup stuff. It keeps a lot of them off the field because you can't go out there, he waves his hand, 'I'm out here, we're just running the ball, don't worry about it.' It doesn't work like that."

"The theory is you pay pass rushers, quarterbacks, and touchdown scorers"

He also said he doesent necessarily subscribe to that himself. Mentioned that shopping in free agency is like shopping for a car. You look for something that fits your needs and wants and if it does that a good value then you go get it. He also used the analogy that if he's in the market for a Honda oddessy then he will go out and buy a Honda oddessy.

I was about to post this too. Interesting that at the end he says he doesn't necessarily subscribe to that. What does that mean for how we value guys? Seems like a mystery.

luke isn't any of those things. Neither are trai and nor well.

Actually it was quite the opposite.

Charles Johnson was our best well-rounded DE last year against the run and pass. Just take a look at the first play against the Saints 2nd go around.

No. Charles Johnson didn't provide anything last year and was thoroughly outplayed by just about any of our other DEs sans Delaire. Sorry.

Don't recall if it was posted here, I imagine it was, but I noted DG made a point to talk about how Mario Addison had improved against the run and the he will be playing more.  High vote of confidence.  If Mario still has more upside, his 22.5 million contract might be a steal.  I'm liking that signing a lot right now...

This is why Ron HAS to go

Simply wasting everyone's time because he wants to coach with his buddies. Shame on Gettleman for letting them stay

Is it cause they are his buddies? Or is the reality more along the lines,  that Rivera believes in the capabilities of his coaches, and therefore, is willing to put his job on the line for it?

I rather him just say he wants to coach with his buddies.

If Rivera truly belivies in Shula and Dorsey as coaches then he needs to get his brain examined.

Ron's loyalty is his biggest weakness and it's going to be the reason why he'll be out of a job next season.

BBR has a transcript of DGs press conference, including "off podium" remarks.  BBR going the extra mile.  Thanks Bill.

Here are a few questions that haven't come up much yet in the press coverage of DG's comments:

Quote

Q: How different is it to go into free agency with maybe as much as $40 million under the cap?

DG: Different since I got here. We had to cut guys to get under, then the next year I think we had to touch one or two contracts to get under, then the last three years we’ve been able to create separation, sort of speak. Meanwhile, you’ve got teams that have got crazy money under the cap. It gives you flexibility. It allows you, for lack of a better term, it allows you to expand your thought process and we’ll see.

Q: Do you think Cam Newton needs to do prepare differently this offseason?

DG: Listen, it’s their free time. Some guys like to play video games and some guys like to do Nickelodeon shows. So it is what it is. As far as I know, Cam’s in Atlanta and getting done what he has to get done.

Q: What’s one question you ask of these players to find out more about their character?

DG: When we interview players, we’ve got a pretty good file on who they are as people and that’s what we go after. We had one guy one year, it was one of these guys who was never caught but always there. We sat him down, had a general conversation, asked him a couple specific questions. We were there with him for 15 minutes, he walks out of the room, I looked at (director of player personnel) Donny Gregory and I said, ‘He will never have a Carolina Panther on his lid,’ because you knew he was full of crap. From talking to people, you get a feel. Every once in awhile, you’re going to get fooled. What happened in ’15 in our locker room was real. That was 63 guys committed to doing the right thing every day all day long. That was real. You need that and that’s what we’re looking for.

You’ve got access to the entire league, and this is a steal league. You steal from me, I’m stealing from you. So they’re very capable of making adjustments.

I found this quote interesting from DG. Shula and Ron seem like the types who fail to realize you can steal ideas, play formations and etc from other teams... Its always lets do it our way until it works.
