You talk as if there is not precedent here. His situation and Micheal Oher's are very similar.

Both hit free agency 27/28 (their "athletic prime") , both entered free agency coming off of a injured season, both are former 1st round picks with prototypical size, both have connections to the Panthers (Matsko/Ryan Kalil), both play dropped off significantly after their first two seasons, and I'm sure there's more. Micheal Oher's play was so bad that they moved him from LT to RT while Kalil has always played LT.

People naturally go back to the things they've had success with and Micheal Oher is Gettlemans best free agent signing, so it is only natural that Gettleman would look at Kalil favorably (As Voth has reported).

Exactly what I was thinking. Gettleman seems to go after players that have had a down year and get at a discount price who have shown potential. Usually the year that was down was injury related. Now this is what he did when we had no cap room. It will be interesting to see if that philosophy continues when he has some spending money.

I don't get the Kalil love on here. The guy is trash. No way I want him protecting Cam's blindside. For depth? Sure. But I'm sure he's still looking to start somewhere.

Spend our resources on a proven commodity. Whitworth would be expensive but proven. Sign him for 2-3 years while we groom a prospect. At the very least Beachum and hope he's completely recovered.

Cam has taken his poundings. Time to give him a clean pocket already. We're wasting the years of Kalil, Olsen and TD with this cheap spending.

Spending on a guy like Whitworth may take us right back to the playoffs.

We all saw in 2015 how well Cam played with an average Oher at LT. Even if we pay a premium price for a year or two, we have the money and it's something that could instantly change our entire offense.

It just blows my mind that this organization continues to be comfortable with rolling the dice on a position that's responsible for keeping your QB off the ground.

There's no reason for me to think he's any better than Remmers.  None

The all important 'unknown factor'. Schrodinger's Cat - until Kalil plays left tackle for the Panthers he is both better and worse than who we have right now. Makes for great discussion...
