Let's discuss Matt Kalil

Well first off, we need depth. Having a former starter as a backup is very valuable, and yes that includes Remmers (who has outplayed Kalil the past few seasons it seems)

Secondly, Oher is a question mark and Remmer is no longer under contract so the only players we have with any starting experience at tackle are Daryl Williams and Trai Turner. We need bodies.

I just want more options at Tackle, and he's an option.

Fair enough and I agree we need options and bodies at tackle but do you think Kalil's price tag is going to be "just another body" type contract?

At first I just assumed it would be but with the market and rookie class as weak as it is, it's tough to say.

I'd still like to see us take a real run at Whitworth

Whitworth would be more costly. Higher pedigree with better play history, and he's a vet at the tail end of his career that's well respected. Think Charles Tillman kind of contract. Not cheap but not expensive. Kalil will be cheaper. Plenty of other, better options available on the market, he has an injury history and only one good year of production. He's essentially Oher 2.0

He can be had at a reasonable, prove it kind of rate in my opinion.

I don't get the Kalil love on here. The guy is trash. No way I want him protecting Cam's blindside. For depth? Sure. But I'm sure he's still looking to start somewhere.

Spend our resources on a proven commodity. Whitworth would be expensive but proven. Sign him for 2-3 years while we groom a prospect. At the very least Beachum and hope he's completely recovered.

Cam has taken his poundings. Time to give him a clean pocket already. We're wasting the years of Kalil, Olsen and TD with this cheap spending.

If the Panthers sign Kalil, I guarantee you they have every intention of playing and starting him at LT.

At this point it is more likely that Oher has played his final snap and will spend 2017 on IR to collect his check than him coming back

You're full of $hit and talking like $hit in your mouth. Oher will be back and will be playing LT.

Meh... You could find tape like that on every player. Especially against Khalil Mack and some of the others featured.

Matt Kalil, if he is indeed ready to go, would bring solid depth to us if nothing else. I personally think he'd be an upgrade at LT or RT for us.

Just a few seasons ago will be 5 years. 5 years removed from his only good season in 2012. He'd have to have an amazing workout showing the Vikings coaches just suck. Kick the tires but Remmers in 2015 was much better than Kalil in 2015 (he basically missed 2016).

You talk as if there is not precedent here. His situation and Micheal Oher's are very similar.

Both hit free agency 27/28 (their "athletic prime") , both entered free agency coming off of a injured season, both are former 1st round picks with prototypical size, both have connections to the Panthers (Matsko/Ryan Kalil), both play dropped off significantly after their first two seasons, and I'm sure there's more. Micheal Oher's play was so bad that they moved him from LT to RT while Kalil has always played LT.

People naturally go back to the things they've had success with and Micheal Oher is Gettlemans best free agent signing, so it is only natural that Gettleman would look at Kalil favorably (As Voth has reported).

Barring the unlikely miracle of a team letting some proven LT go that we can afford, all of our options in free agency are going to be of the "kicking tires" variety. Kalil, just like Oher, at least has a connection here so that gives him an edge in my book.

Staley and Thomas may cost more than we'd want to give, but can (and I say should) be done.  Peters is more attainable and would require less compensation.  Okung may not be super special but the Seahawks reached out to him today so acquiring him would at least harm the enemy.  There are options.
