Addy on Kony. Perhaps a rekindling of belief is in order...Maybe?

On Twitter, Jeremy had a poll of whether we'd be happy with Ealy & Addison as our starting DEs this season.  I voted no.  I like Addison's confidence in Ealy, and hope Ealy does break out, but I don't think we can count on it, though with this year being a contract year, he might have the extra motivation to focus.

Definitely want to see us draft 1 or 2 DEs (hopefully 1 in the 1st 2 rounds), and maybe even add another PROVEN vet (especially if we let CJ walk...)  We need competition.  Last year we didn't have it and it hurt us.

I'm happy with re-signing Addison & Horton & tagging KK.  It gives us a great foundation to work with, but we should view this as setting us up for improving, not being "done."  I'm quite hopeful Getty will find us some good pass rushers.  This is the year to do it with our high draft pick and a deep draft class.

I think pick 8 is likely a DE as much as people want Adams/Hooker/Fournette and I could easily see us doubling down later. Heck, if one of the guys like Charlton or Walker drops, we might take two by 40.

I've been saying for a couple weeks now I'd go for broke on 2 of Solomon Thomas, Malik McDowell and Taco Charlton.

If im Gettleman im trading back up into the 1st and securing two of these guys. With part of the reasoning being what you said, money. Pass rushers are being paid these days and guys like Malik and Solomon have the versatility to help replace KK after this season along with Butler.

A front of 2 of the 3 mentioned above along with KK, Star and Butler this year is very solid. Going forward if we do let KK walk we're still sitting pretty with a solid foundation of youth on cheap contracts for 3-4 years.

I'd love to lock up Swearinger at safety. He's only 25 and from everything I've seen he has really matured this season. He's so versatile and athletic as well. Its time we start finding legit starters that can all grow as a unit together for a few years. With the pass rushers in this draft and the safeties in the FA pool, I think we'd get much better value from drafting pass rushers and signing Swearinger.

Given the price for really good DEs, after their rookie contracts, it really *might* make sense for Dave to trade back into the 1st to get that 5th year option if there's a DE he really wants.  With our 3rd round comp pick as added draft capital, this really wouldn't shock me, and would be quite shrewd. .. something like 2 quarters, 1 dime and 3 nickels instead of 1 quarter, 3 dimes and 4 nickels...

Using this draft trade value calculator, http://www.footballguys.com/pickvalue.htm

it looks like our picks 40 & 98 could get us around the 27th pick....

Huddlers were bitching that Ealy wasn't getting enough snaps no more than a year ago. WTF are you talking about? Lol

Revisionist history.

Numbers don't lie. Huddlers however get drunk and forget what they did Or didn't see.

DEFENSIVE ENDS

Kony Ealy — 623

Charles Johnson — 543

Mario Addison — 434

Wes Horton — 332

Ryan Delaire — 139

Lavar Edwards — 114

Larry Webster — 19

Ealy led DEs in playing time for the second straight year, but finished with fewer than half (10) the QB pressures Johnson (25) and Addison (23) totaled.

Keep this in mind, I think Rivera and Washington were pushing Ealy into the LE spot but he's better at the RE position from what I've heard. After being benched and coming in for CJ at RE, he got way more pressure on the QB. Maybe it's not him coming off the bench that suits him after all.

Ealy has all tools but he's still very immature.

You do realize we acquired Jared Allen mid season? And that Ealy would come on during garbage time, right?

Just admit your wrong bro. He has played more snaps than any DE in the past 2 seasons, including last year when we didn't have Allen at all. Plus you said "no more than a year ago". If you want to learn how to bend the truth to meet your own agenda, go play in the tinderbox for a while. They will teach you some new tricks.

While perusing Bill Voth's site on the locking up of Mario Addison, I was like, "Wouldn't it be grand if Addy is absolutely right about Ealy?"

"A guy like Kony Ealy has got unbelievable talents, man. I work with the guy everyday. Once Kony get it in his head that he's unstoppable, then he's going to be unstoppable. The guy's a freak."

Sure! We've heard people say something similar to that about Kony Ealy before. Ealy has been hyped on and off to varying degrees since his arrival in Charlotte, but at least for me, I've lost a marked amount of faith in the young man and see him more as a rotational guy with roller coaster upside (and downside). But it's something about Addison saying that Ealy can be "unstoppable" that resonates with me a little more. Maybe Addy's sentiment has rekindled the flame that perhaps Ealy can be what Dave Gettleman expected him to be when he picked him. I mean, I don't know whether it's just teammate-speak or not, because this is really the first time that I've seen Addy give a few words on anything (not saying that he hasn't before, just the first I've seen it) and it's a breath of fresh air to see a glimpse of his personality. It's kind of like his words matches his play, if you get what I'm saying. Being that Addy has basically been the consumate professional over the years, I tend to give his micro assessment of Kony Ealy some weight. I mean, no one can really argue that the journeyman Addison, who had to fight to get an opportunity and then follow through by making the most of it, hasn't pretty much been on target when speaking on himself.

"For a guy like me, the sky's the limit. I know a couple tricks of the trade, I've played against the best, so I know what it takes to be able to get to the quarterback. And I'm going to apply everything I've got — even the kitchen sink — to get there."

Addy is speaking in the future tense, but he has already done just that...in production, attitude and effort. He has achieved good things in effective spot duty, and in my opinion his play may be a little bit understated when you consider his production versus his actual time on the field the last few years. So, again, I think that if Addy says Ealy is a potential force to be reckoned with, then it's likely credible...even if we haven't seen it yet. Yeah, I know. We've seen flashes. But you can't be a true "freak" without consistency. Maybe 2017 will be the season where the circuit breaker doesn't continually trip for Kony.

Wouldn't it be great if Ealy possesed the knowing and belief in himself that Addy possesses? And I'm not only talking about Addison's belief in Addison, but also Addison's belief in Ealy.

This sure does sound like teammate-speak for "he's talented but lazy" or "he's talented but crazy"

Teammate-speak is healthy - the Broncos showed us what a world without teammate-speak looks like and it wasn't pretty - but still, it's hard to pull any real hope from it.
