That's a common assumption but not exactly true. Our DL was above average in pressure. The big change was Worley's improvement and Bradberry returning resulting in many more plays where we get pressure actually resulting in sacks. DE group was probably slightly below average in the pressure department but DT last year made up for it. Would love to get back to 2013 though with a couple dominant edge players. Sign CJ, Peppers, draft a guy in the first couple rounds and have them all compete and I think the position will be solid.

Ealy could break out any time too. Should not be counting on that but can definitely see it happening. Classic Panthers draft pick. 3 up and down years on rookie contract, dominant year in contract year then is tagged and then walks or just walks after one great year. In recent memory both Josh and Hardy are similar situations. Ealy has the potential to make our DL dominant again next year and take the team over the top. That's why I'd kind of like to see an extension for Ealy for like 3 years, $5M per. Not sure he would do it or if taking the chance would be worth it for us but would hate to see him breakout and have another tag situation or have to let him walk for big dollars and take a 3rd round comp pick...

Only 21 of our 47 sacks came from the DE position. That's 44.6%. I haven't looked into it, but I'd be surprised if that wasn't among the league lowest in terms of the percentage of sacks produced by a team's primary edge rushers.

Insurance.

Nothing wrong with cheap insurance. If injuries hit during training camp or somehow DE isn't drafted, Horton is a known asset. He can improve too, he looked the best he's looked after he can back the last time. The defense got better once he was starting too.

My wish is the DLine rotation looks like (Barnett, Addison, Ealy, Pep [horton or Delaire])

Sounds pretty sweet.

I wonder though if we'll see KK outside a bit more as Vernon Butler develops.  KK seemed to make a difference when he slid outside to DE on some downs late in the season.  I could see it happening..., especiallly as Butler was limited in 2016 due to injury, and if KK plays on the tag, I'd think Dave & Ron would want to see A LOT of Butler this year to make sure what we have in him before potentially letting KK walk next year if his price is too high...

Not if you have Mario, Pep and Barnnet as speed rushers.  I could see that in goaline situations thoe...

A couple things... Notice I said DE was below average but DT made up for it for the DL as a whole. Another thing, sacks aren't the only indicator of pressure. And look into it more.

It was 23 (Addison 9.5, Ealy 5, CJ 4, Horton 2.5, Delaire 1 and Edwards 1). Seeing as how we were 2nd and the worst team only had two more than us, I think you are overstating our edge rush awfulness. Oakland was last at 25 total with Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin. Beasely led the league with 15.5 and they were 13 sacks behind us. Since Ealy, CJ, Addison and Horton were the rotation we basically got 10+ sacks from both end spots and that doesn't count all the times we had our DTs on the edge rushing. Remember Star's 3 sack game? I'm pretty sure he was on the edge for at least 2 of those.

I'm not saying we don't need another young DE stud as that would make the DL awesome but we did have 36 sacks from the DL which would have put us close to top 10 with no other sacks.

But he was talking about the DE position.. Nobody is arguing about the DT's..

If you actually watch the games you can see we weren't getting efficent pressure from our DE's..

Numbers can be skewed..

All this talk about pass rushing DEs while ignoring the fact that we don't have linebackers that we send on the blitz too much. Luke is too valuable in pass protect and TD is also to a degree. He's not at his best while rushing the QB and is too valuable in other sets. Did we even see a blitz from the secondary at all last season? It would be nice to have a safety that could get after it too. One of those hybrid guys would be a great fit for us. Maybe Jeremy Cash can be that guy.

If you get better pressure from the front 4.. You don't have to blitz your LB .

Huh...

Lol.

Leonard Johnson, Daryl Worley, and even Tre Boston blitz'd a lot last season. In fact, our linebackers didn't have to blitz much with our front remaining dominant for the most part of games. I think it's a misleading idea that we've blitz'd a lot for sacks, cause the film I've watched says otherwise.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
