At this point, he is probably as good as CJ

When Horton was off our team for a time last autumn, we were in bad shape.

When he came back, our run defense seemed to improve, as did our overall defense. Now he wasn't a pro-bowler out there, but he sure does show that sometimes a small contributor is much more important than you'd think.

If and when they do something with CJ that might give us an idea of their plans at the DE position.  If he receives any kind of guaranteed money you can almost pencil him in for a spot on the 53man.  If he does play I don't expect it to be as cheap as last year.

I'll be curious what Horton's contract looks like also.  The fact it is multiyear is interesting.

As most people know we usually keep 5 DE on the roster.

Pretty safe to say Ealy and Addison are locks.  Also I think here is a good chance we draft one with how deep this draft is at that position.  If that happens you can count them as one of the 5.

If we have plans to sign KK and Star in the future we almost need a rookie DE on their cheap rookie deal to offset Addison, Short, and Star.

not much we can do out of house till free agency starts. I like this signing though. Horton is solid depth.

Horton seemed to have a breakthrough at the end of this year. He caused 2 or 3 forced fumbles and he got a little more dangerous in the pass rushing area.

I doubt this deal ties us to him for two years for very much money. Probably has plenty of incentives and will be easy for us to release him if other FAs or draft picks out shine him.

If anything its probably a no guarantee deal meaning he will be there for camp and gives us insurance on a solid depth DE guy that will be battling whomever we sign or draft.  Not a bad move. My guess is he is beaten out in camp by a FA or draft pick.

I think I'd prefer to gamble and start Ealy on the left and pull the comp pick (5th maybe) from CJ at this point.  Coaching staff already thinks the left is Ealy's better side.
