Ian Rappaport on Twitter says 3 years for 22.5m with upside of 25m.  11.5 guaranteed and 9.75 paid this year.

So the guaranteed money is front loaded, while the deal itself is looking slightly front loaded. Could this be Dave's way of working out a slightly back loaded deal for KK, Turner, or Norwell?

The anticipation of this offseason is killin me

For sure, hopefully it's Solomon Thomas

Bottom Line

Explosive defender who combines strength, quickness, and a muscle-car motor to drive him around the field making play after play. Has the hands and feet to be a quick-win specialist and the size to fit as a 4-3 or 3-4 defensive end who can reduce inside for pass-rush downs. He has all the athletic traits to become a high-impact player and possesses more than enough skill and talent to believe he will continue to elevate his game as a pro. Thomas has the potential to become the best defender from this draft class and a future all-pro.

Yep, very similar to Ayers' contract from last year:

Quote

Robert Ayers signed a 3 year, $19,500,000 contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including $10,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $6,500,000. In 2017, Ayers will earn a base salary of $4,000,000 and a roster bonus of $2,000,000. Ayers has a cap hit of $6,000,000.

3 million more total with only 1 million more guaranteed. He will have a higher cap hit year one then that will drop significantly over the next 2, whereas Ayers' deal was more evenly spaced out. Safe move by front loading it allowing us to cut bait in the future if things don't work out that well.

Mario would have definitely received a much bigger deal if he had waited until the free agency period had started.

Its almost as if the tried-and-true "Gettleman disrespects our players and drives them away" theory is just so much bullshit.

Whodathunkit?

Details on #Panthers DE Mario Addison's 3-year, $22.5M deal: $11.5M in guarantees, $9.75M paid in 2017, total value with upside is $25.05M.

Makes sense to frontload the deal for a 30-year-old who's just now potentially getting a starring role. Gives him basically a year to prove himself. Worst case scenario they can probably get out of the deal next year with limited liability, and there's probably very little guaranteed in year three.

Jury is still out on Ealy. He flashed in the Superbowl, so he has it in him. Question is when he'll erupt and put all the pieces together.

Ealy has been in the league 3 years less than Addison.

Addison finally comes through in 2016 as a possible every-down DE.  "Great signing!"

Kony Ealy, 3 years younger?  "Bust!"

You couldn't make this stuff up if you tried.  :P

They proceed to then attack Gettleman like he overpaid Addison, acting like Addison wouldn't have easily gotten a $9-10 million contract via FA.

panthersb_logo.gif Panthers re-sign DE Mario Addison (3 years, $22.5 million): B Grade
Mario Addison had always been a decent rotational player, but he became a late bloomer in 2016, notching 9.5 sacks. I had him listed as 57th in the Top 100 NFL Free Agent Rankings.

This is a solid contract, but not a great one. Addison has enjoyed just one strong season, so what if he can't reproduce what he accomplished in 2016? Also, he turns 30 in September, so he could decline soon. That said, the Panthers needed to keep him around, so they did a good job retaining him.

49ersb_logo.gif 49ers sign DT Earl Mitchell (4 years, $16 million): VERY FAKE KIELBASA MILLEN Grade
John Lynch is the latest TV analyst to become a general manager. The previous one, of course, was Matt Millen, who ruined Detroit's franchise. If this signing is any indication, the 49ers have as much hope as the Millen-led Lions did.

I can't get over how bad this contract is. Mitchell, 30 in September, hasn't played well in a couple of years. In fact, he was a huge liability for the Dolphins. His effort level dropped since signing a big deal with Miami after leaving a better team (Texans). This is almost never a recipe for success, and Mitchell, as a result, struggled to stay healthy.

The Dolphins eagerly cut Mitchell this offseason because they didn't want to pay him $4 million, yet the 49ers are willing to give him $5.5 million in 2017. Why? It makes absolutely no sense. Mitchell should've signed a 1-year "prove it" deal, but it seems like San Francisco was duped into overpaying him.

A better kicker would have gotten us in the playoffs. Two less INTs on 1st and goal and two less pick sixes and we were in the playoffs. Both lost us 4 games a piece (some overlap).

That said, let's not act like we played well last year. If we played well and missed out on the playoffs because of one bad CB game (like the first Atlanta/NO games), then I'd agree with you. Even with Norman, I don't think we make the playoffs and even if we miraculously got in, we weren't going to last more than a game.

I disagree.. I think a better secondary early in the season wins us games that we lost because we couldn't stop anybody passing attack.. But opinions are like you know what..

I don't think he's rotational. I think we signed him to be the starter and based on 4-3 ends (as opposed to 3-4 OLBs), it's a decent deal. I think the other poster was saying at worst we have what he's been, a solid pass rusher. At best, he's a full time starter and potential double digit sack guy.

Are you thinking 1 more FA could be Johnson? I think a top pick (maybe even 8) will be our rookie DE and based on the rookie class I think that could be the starter opposite Addison with Ealy/CJ as the backups. I'd be happy with a Thomas or Barnett/Addison/Ealy/CJ set of DEs to go with the guys we have in the middle and the LBers behind them.

7.5 isn't full time money.. And i think if he is used full time he loses his effectiveness.. I can see more snaps and a reduesed role on special teams.. But a full time role for his body type and age would not be good for him or the team...

I think adding 2 to that position is the move.. 1 FA and draft Barnnet or Thomas in the 1st..

Pep or CJ as FA ..
