FAs released since 2013.png

A look at a lot of guys many on here wanted us to sign to big deals. I remember Verner and Anthony Collins specifically. For those who don't know, Verner was just released this morning by TB.

But it's still interesting to see how many guys were handed a ton of money and just didn't produce. It's the dirty side of free agency that could end up hurting your team in the long run. While I'm still on the "sign some talent" bandwagon this offseason, I'd prefer that the team does their due-diligence and sign guys they know can come in and produce in the systems we have in place, not just hot names for the FA period.

What about guys like:

Eric Weddle 4/26mil

Marvin Jones 5/40mil

Mohamed Sanu 5/32mil

Kelechi Osemele 5/60mil

Bruce Irvin 4/40mil

Damon Harrison 5/46mil

Janoris Jenkins 5/62mil

Alex Mack 5/45mil

Lamar Miller 4/26mil

Casey Hayward 3/15mil

Luckily, we have Dave Gettleman as GM.

Signing someone with a big name is almost as likely to happen as signing back  Greg Hardy.

To clarify, we're not going to sign someone like JPP on high contracts. We might sign some decent chunk guys that fit our system, but still don't expect much if we want to prioritize our guys first.

Exactly. I think Gman will sign multiple 2nd tier guys this year. Expect a safety, offensive tackle, defensive end, corner, wide receiver and running back being signed during the free agency period. This is what Gman does, plugs holes and drafts the best player available. This is what the Patriots do every year.

I fully expect Victor Cruz to not only sign with us, but to be our biggest name acquisition.

If you are implying those were all guys we should have made a run at, then all the guys bolded are in positions we had no interest in last year due to the positions they play, the talent we had at the time, or what we run schematically. Keep in mind that this is all without the benefit of hindsight:

We had Benjamin coming back to pair with Funchess and Ginn to play the slot so we didn't need Sanu or Jones. We have a logjam at DT already so we didn't need Damon Harrison. Osemele is a guard and we have two of the best young guards in the league already with Turner and Norwell. Irvin is a 3-4 OLB so not a fit in our Defense. We dropped Norman so there was no way in hell we were going to pay Jenkins. Mack is a center and we already have one of the best in Kalil. Didn't need Miller because we already had Stew. Weddle and Hayward are the only two I could have seen us actually make a run at, and who knows if we did, but we didn't land them.

Either way, I'm perfectly fine paying a fair price for a good player as long as they're worth it, and a lot of those guys you listed seem to be worth it after their first year on their contracts (I will say though that the Mohamed Sanu contract is horrible no matter what any falcons fan says). This goes along with what I said in my OP though, do your due diligence and pay the guys what they're worth, don't overpay for guys you want to be worth it.

Honestly, I'll be content with getting Victor Cruz as our only FA acquisition. If Ginn is getting old by then Byrd already is showing to me he's the future. I like the kid, and he looked reliable from the few times I've seen him.

Just get me Cruz/ a reliable slot receiver, a vet DE of sorts, a SS, Munnerlyn possibly, and tackle depth and I'm content. Get that TE and RB from the draft, along with a future DE to groom and we're monsters for years to come.

You are fighting the good fight, but I have come to the conclusion that the huddle is divided between 3 types of fans:

1. The pragmatic, knowledgeable, articulate fan who has a long term retrospective and forward looking perspective of this team.

2. The Front-running, trolling, likely under-25, knee jerk chicken Littles who practice revisionist history and never admit an incorrect call.

3. Those making good fun of both sides.

As a wise poster on here once said to me... gotta know the difference and treat them as such.

I know I kind of crapped on the idea of Cruz earlier this week but the more I think about it the more I'd be ok with it. Put him in the slot and give Cam a dude with reliable hands to move the chains on third down and show the young guys in the receivers room how to play. I'm all for it. It's obvious we need more of a Vet presence in that room in addition to Ginn.

I'm not as sold on Byrd as many on this board. To me he's just a guy that can run fast. No idea if he is the heir apparent to Teddy. But yeah, I'd love a guy like Berry but I'd settle for a cyprien at Safety, and then I'd love to bring back Captain too.

I'm implying those are guys who signed big contracts, which as of right now are living up to it.

"OP", you're taking a small sample and trying to make it something which is not.

I'm not, you're just reading it that way. My overall message was be careful who you sign and make sure they're worth it, not "everyone signed to a big contract is a huge bust".
