Horizon Zero Dawn

Anybody picking it up at launch like me? Between this and Zelda next week, I'll pretty set on open world games for a while! Reviews have been coming in, and the game it getting some exceptional critic scores. 88 on metacritic, with some publications calling it the new standard for the open world genre. 

 

 

Here's a pod talking about the mechanics of the game, story (no real spoilers), combat, interactions with the robots etc. Really psyched to play on the 28th.

Since I have an XBONE and a PC, I'm disappointed.  I remember seeing a trailer while watching YouTube or something and I thought it looked fantastic.  Enjoy it!

About 4 hours in. Couldn't stop playing. This game is amazing. The graphics, movement, the lore, combat, climbing mechanics, and even the (seemingly) small choices you get in actions/dialogues, it's all so good and flows together nicely.

The combat is so fuging addictive. All I want to do is seek out more poo to fight.

The fight at the end of The Proving...I hadn't utilized the heavy melee blows until that point. Was pleasantly surprised at how well the mechanics worked with it and how the game sort of adapted to how you came at the enemy. I don't know if maybe I was overthinking it or maybe I'm just not remembering it correctly, but the animations of attacks timed with positioning of the enemies seemed to flow well and you didn't have animations that frame-jumped or anything. Could've stayed in that sequence for an hour and been content.

I'm so content with just running around the starter area, jumping off rocks and then shooting my bow. I can't even imagine how crazy some of these hunts are going to get later in the game.

I'm so jealous right now.  Reading all of your comments, checking the Horizon sub on Reddit, and having to listen to my co-worker every day is killing me!  Luckily, my buddy said he'd let me borrow his  PS4 when he's done playing it (he's one of those guys who has every system, so he probably wouldn't miss it for a while).  I'll be six months behind, but it will be worth it.

I'm considering buying a PS4 slim for myself- between this, The Last of Us (never played it), Spiderman, God of War- it might be worth it if I can find a deal for one around 200

I've never owned a playstation in my life, and I currently own an Xbone so it would be a totally unnecessary purchase.

The Last of Us is amazing. It's the best single player game I've ever played. It really is a must play. It sounds like you'd get a lot of use out of it since you listed 3 games you're interested in. That's not even  including the remastered games that our PS Must plays like God of War 3, The Uncharted Collection, Uncharted 4, etc.
