I love Derrick Barnett

WOW!!

Are we sure this guy is better than Solomon Thomas?
Are we also sure that Gettleman isn't trying to draft Thomas at 8 then trade back up into the first round to get Barnett in the 20s?
Double dipping is Gettleman's speciality.

I don't usually like the idea of us double dipping

However, taking Thomas and Barnett could see us sorted at DE brilliantly for the next few years. Biggest problem is not us taking another DE, but I don't see Barnett falling to the 20s, think he will be gone by the mid teens at the latest and it'd cost too much to move back up that high I feel. I also don't think Thomas falls to us at #8 either sadly

We'll see. The general Huddle thought didn't have Big Vern squarely on the radar either from what I recall. People didn't really start giving Butler totally serious consideration until very late in the game when Igo spilled the beans about Gettleman's favorites. I don't expect for that to happen until late again, especially considering that I can't say we've "visited" any of them, and Davis won't even have any workouts (if at all) until the middle of this month, where he presumably will have his own event.

As for Gettleman, this is a year where I fully expect him to get back to his philosophical roots. As such, I don't believe that he'll go into this draft with any preconceived notions regarding need. He's going to take the BPA! Butler was his BPA last year, sure, but then Getty kind of went off the rails because of the Norman fiasco. I don't think there's any way he does that this year, so he is going to be focused even more! That being said, where I believe the root of our disagreement may be is not the fact that Getty is going to take his BPA, but hinges upon our seeming difference as to whether or not Lattimore or Davis could be seriously perceived as the BPA when we're on the clock. I, unlike you and probably most others, believe that they are just that talented, and could be perceived as better long term prospects at their position than any player except save for Garrett who is the slam dunk top prize of this draft. Maybe Thomas, Allen, Fournette and Adams should be in that discussion as well, but Garrett is the guy set apart. I think that for the others, it will come down to the GM and their perceptions of consensus and value, and whether a player fits their system. Gettleman has proven that he's not married to the consensus opinion, nor is he going to outright skip a player because people don't see that player as a slam dunk fit (e.g. Shaq). I think that positional skills, character, football IQ, developmental progression (over a career and the most recent season), and that "hate losing" thing is what Gettleman covets a little more than most (not all, but most). As such, I think that there is no way that Davis, Lattimore, and of course Barnett. I think these guys are the real deal at their positions, so I don't think G-man is going to preclude them from serious discussion.

In short, he's going to think like a GM, and the Huddle is gonna Huddle.  But I do realize that it's all guesswork at the end of the day. Some Huddlers---you included---usually have more compelling rationale than others.

Perhaps one day regarding that All-Pro. From a value standpoint, I just can't justify it, no disrespect to Igo. For what it's worth, I try and do my part for this place with discussion.

Regarding Corey Davis, I really like the kid. Just don't think he's sure fire enough to take top 10. Health questions and level of competition in college are the main concerns.

Regarding Lattimore, I could very well see him being a top 5 player on a lot of boards. A team like the Pats who really values corners will likely have him high. I agree that I don't think DG wouldn't take a corner if he's the BPA but I just highly doubt a corner could be top 10 on his board this year. He's clearly shown he doesn't value that position as much as others like DE. That's where it stems from for me. Could easily see 4 DL higher on our board than any corner, maybe even more. (Garrett, Thomas, Allen, Barnett, possibly Taco or others)

As for all pro, I think it is worth it for any die hard Panthers fan. It's a beer a month and I usually skip out on a couple slower months. Jeremy provides a lot of info you can't really hear elsewhere and it's pretty much all spot on. Even without that, this forum is so much better than every single other forum that it's worth helping Jeremy out.

While I readily admit I am a Tennessee fan, when it comes to UT guys at the next level, I'd like to believe I keep a pretty cool head and give them non-biased and fair evaluations.

I understand Barnett's combine and pro-day didn't blow anyone away, but his production and film tell the story, IMO. I put my pros and cons and him in another thread, but I legitimately believe the kid's floor is Charles Johnson 2.0, and his ceiling is Von Miller. I wouldn't bat an eye if the Panthers picked him at 8. If he somehow fell to the 2nd (I don't think it's possible...), then they should sprint to the podium.

If we go Fournette, safety or Howard at 8 I could absolutely see us using the 2nds to trade back up into the first to nab Barnett if he's sitting there in the 20s.

I dont think anyone is projecting reuban foster to go in the top 7. If he's there, we should definitely consider him. Whats better than having 1 keuchly? 2 keuchlys! And plus thomas davis is near the end of his career. Once he leaves, its gnna be harder for kuechly cuz he'll need to carry the load. Having a young stud to groom would really help. Plus if soloman thomas or the top 3 dbs are off the board, theres no reason to go elsewhere. Mccaffery, cook, barnett, are not better than foster. If foster had his character in control, he would be going top 5. Dont deny the talent

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
