Combine confirms that he is bendy but not explosive.  He's a snap jumper.

On the one hand, that's disappointing.  I don't think you can feel great about drafting him at 8.  I do think there is now a chance he falls into the second round.  He should be a good player for a long time in the league.  But not many edge rushers are great without having explosive athleticism.

NFL OTs are just too good (at least on non-Panthers teams, that is).

Particapated in the combine with a stomach virus.. I wouldn't ding him for lacking in some drills... His tape and college production is so good.  No way will he drop past top 20 in the draft...

Interesting. Open to changing my opinion if he betters his results at pro day.

I think bottom half of first round is a good range. Not saying he isn't going to be a good player.  Just don't think he is good enough to go top 10 (without better measurables).

Would you have said the same thing about dwight Freeny..

Hard to say - I can't find the full combine results for Freeney.  I don't think the 40 is particularly predictive, so that's not important to me.  Only other stat I can find on him is his vert, which was 37" (vs. Barnett's 31").  That suggests Freeney was a more explosive athlete than Barnett, but it's hard to say without full data on Freeney.

We know more about Barnett's athleticism* (keeping in mind that he had a stomach virus around the combine time)

https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/derek-barnett

Barnett is in the 27th percentile (by SPARQ) athletically for NFL Edge defenders.  One of his top comparables (per mockdraftable) is Ryan Delaire (also Jeremiah Attachu and Dee Ford).

Edge is one of the few spots on the field where you consistently get a 1-on-1 matchup - therefore, athleticism is at a premium.  The ability to explode out of a stance and immediately put the OT at a disadvantage is a huge part of getting sacks in the NFL.  Taking one extra step to bend the edge and get to the QB is the difference between a sack fumble and a QB hit but completed pass.

With Barnett, he just seems to lack explosive traits.  I think he will win with technique and timing in the NFL, but average athletes tend to struggle at 4-3 DE in the NFL.  I think we need look no farther than Kony Ealy to see that (and honestly, Barnett and Ealy put up eerily similar stats at the combine - https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/kony-ealy)

Barnett shows great bend getting around the edge and I think he'll be a good player in the league.  I just don't think he's a top 10 talent.  If we draft him, I hope I'm 100% wrong.

He very well might drastically improve his numbers at his pro day.  I certainly thought he would do better at the combine based on his film.  I'll happily change my opinion if that's the case.

Are we sure this guy is better than Solomon Thomas?

Are we also sure that Gettleman isn't trying to draft Thomas at 8 then trade back up into the first round to get Barnett in the 20s?

Double dipping is Gettleman's speciality.

thants going to be alot of defensive ends all vying for playing time . Getting those two and having Peppers/CJ/Addison in addition short, star, butler, love, whew lawd. Depth and talent for days on the dline.

FWIW, my gut tells me that it's going to come down to Barnette or Lattimore, or possibly even Corey Davis. I believe that Fournette, Thomas, Allen, Adams, Hooker, and maybe even Howard will be gone. I think that Barnette, Lattimore, and Davis are not getting the play in the Huddle that they deserve based upon their skill sets and the immediate impact that they would have upon the team. In the eyes if the Huddle there may be sexier picks, but Gettleman will be looking strictly from a professional's point of view.

Don't think Lattimore or Davis are in play at 8 top dawg. I hope Barnett is and suspect he may be but thinking he's not super realistic there either. Think it's one of the safeties, Fournette, Thomas, Allen or Howard. That's 6 players and Myles Garrett obvious to go #1 so unless all 6 of them are who's taken before us (which I doubt) I would bet on it being one of them. Can't really see Lattimore or Davis being above any of those 6 on our board. Possible on Barnett though. Should become All-Pro to get some inside info on the first round...

We'll see. The general Huddle thought didn't have Big Vern squarely on the radar either from what I recall. People didn't really start giving Butler totally serious consideration until very late in the game when Igo spilled the beans about Gettleman's favorites. I don't expect for that to happen until late again, especially considering that I can't say we've "visited" any of them, and Davis won't even have any workouts (if at all) until the middle of this month, where he presumably will have his own event.

As for Gettleman, this is a year where I fully expect him to get back to his philosophical roots. As such, I don't believe that he'll go into this draft with any preconceived notions regarding need. He's going to take the BPA! Butler was his BPA last year, sure, but then Getty kind of went off the rails because of the Norman fiasco. I don't think there's any way he does that this year, so he is going to be focused even more! That being said, where I believe the root of our disagreement may be is not the fact that Getty is going to take his BPA, but hinges upon our seeming difference as to whether or not Lattimore or Davis could be seriously perceived as the BPA when we're on the clock. I, unlike you and probably most others, believe that they are just that talented, and could be perceived as better long term prospects at their position than any player except save for Garrett who is the slam dunk top prize of this draft. Maybe Thomas, Allen, Fournette and Adams should be in that discussion as well, but Garrett is the guy set apart. I think that for the others, it will come down to the GM and their perceptions of consensus and value, and whether a player fits their system. Gettleman has proven that he's not married to the consensus opinion, nor is he going to outright skip a player because people don't see that player as a slam dunk fit (e.g. Shaq). I think that positional skills, character, football IQ, developmental progression (over a career and the most recent season), and that "hate losing" thing is what Gettleman covets a little more than most (not all, but most). As such, I think that there is no way that Davis, Lattimore, and of course Barnett. I think these guys are the real deal at their positions, so I don't think G-man is going to preclude them from serious discussion.

In short, he's going to think like a GM, and the Huddle is gonna Huddle.  But I do realize that it's all guesswork at the end of the day. Some Huddlers---you included---usually have more compelling rationale than others.

Perhaps one day regarding that All-Pro. From a value standpoint, I just can't justify it, no disrespect to Igo. For what it's worth, I try and do my part for this place with discussion.
