Hornets hope that Cam will help sell out arena

The Charlotte Hornets are hoping Cam Newton will help sell out Spectrum Center March 18.

For the first time, the team will be giving away bobble heads of the Carolina Panthers quarterback to the first 15,000 fans in attendance at the home game against the Washington Wizards, the Hornets said Monday. The figurines are of Newton in his signature Superman pose wearing a black Buzz City jersey.

Hornets President and Chief Operating Officer Fred Whitfield said the giveaway is an effort to drive attendance and keep fan momentum going as the team makes a push for the playoffs.

Past fan giveaways have turned into sellout nights, Whitfield noted. Starting lineup figurines of Nic Batum and Kemba Walker were given out on Dec. 23 and Feb. 11, respectively – and both nights were sold out, Whitfield noted.

“(Newton) has long supported our Hornets team and come out to games from time to time, worn our jerseys at games. Honestly, he’s just been a great fan and supporter of ours,” Whitfield said.

“We hope that our fans will create a home court advantage for our team and energize our team.”

The Hornets’ home game Saturday against the Los Angeles Clippers was the seventh sell-out game at Spectrum Center, the team said. Last season, the Hornets sold out 13 games, so the hope is to exceed that this year, Whitfield said.

Whitfield said it’s unclear whether Newton will come to the March 18 game: “He’s got such a busy schedule ... but we are hopeful that he will be in attendance.”

If they keep up their current effort they'd be lucky to continue to get Bobcat level attendance. At least the Bobcats tried to compete on the court. Pretty soon the only way to get fans going to games again will be to give away Growl towels and hypnotize the crowd into think it is a football game.

But I do approve of the bobble-head!

Yea, the Hornets have really been going through it. Luckily for them, they play in the east. I'm just hoping my Pelicans fully get on this tank train. At the end of the day, it doesn't even matter though. Cavs have the east on lock until Bron hangs the sneaks up. Cavs vs Warriors pt 3 coming up.

I might come to Charlotte for this game, though. I get a Cam bobble head and get to see a good Bullets team

Celtics can beat the Cavs.

A healthy Cavs team? Celtics and the Raptors are the only teams in the east who could make the Cavs actually work, but worst case is the Cavs needing 6 games to take those 2 teams out. Celtics need another star, because Bron Smith and Shump will lock IT up, and with him being such a defensive liability, Kyrie will eat. 26 M's to Horford was a mistake, but I do think Ainge will get Heyward next year and then I might be willing to say they can beat the Cavs in a series

Celtics' depth can win them a series against the Cavs. LeBron will cramp up being forced to play every minute. If I had to put money down it would be on the Cavs but Celtics could certainly take them out. And I wouldn't rule out the Cavs blowing the 1 seed with Love out.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
