Run Blocking | Pass Blocking 2nd look at OJ Howard

As Rivera mentioned in his press conference the need for the offense to transform especially the running game to take the load off from Cam

In order to do that with much aligned LT position Panther are searching hard for a complete TE that  can contribute in blocking scheme while providing a receiving options with solid hands.

There will be prospects that shines in underwear but OJ Howard is a Pads player & his talent will raise the value of others around him, don't get fooled.

Along with the GIFS there couple of game tapes against premier defenses

There is a good break down from Steeler blog

Much like he was coming out of high school, Howard is the top tight end in this year’s class, which is a pretty strong group overall. Howard has everything you look for – receiving ability, blocking ability, and versatility.

If you want to be a tight end in the NFL, especially in Pittsburgh, you better be able to block. Howard excels at it and to me, more importantly, embraces the thought. Physical, nasty demeanor that coaches will adore.

It isn’t just tenacity either, it’s technique too. Watch him set his hips and create the run lane for the back.

He was underutilized as a receiver but that didn’t mean he was ineffective. And he showed up in big moments, including both National Championship games. Killed Clemson in both with over 100 yards and a score in each.

Howard benefited from playing in Alabama’s offense. As close to a pro-style attack you’ll find, he was used on a ton of common run schemes he’ll get in the NFL. Base blocking the end, split zone and kicking out the EMOL, all the stuff so many of these college tight ends and offenses aren’t asked to do. That’s going to give him a leg up on his NFL transition.

Now, his run blocking isn’t perfect. He is later out of his three point stance than a two point which causes him to struggle in his base blocks. Watch him in the clip below.

Work ethic and effort right now are what I question about him.

His conference creates weak competition for him. He doesn't have to face many tough defenses or defensive backs, hence his inflated stats. Not to mention he just seems mediocre.

Now, back at work ethic, here's what I found on him:

TE O.J. Howard, Alabama: A false start penalty, multiple dropped passes, poor effort on a catch able target, and lining up with a stance that you’d think would have been addressed at Alabama were among the things that confirmed my concerns about Howard on tape. Howard is the most impressive athlete at the position in Mobile, but his approach to the game is a detriment to his ability.

He seems to not really get the game. He may have the physical looks, but not the mental or game-mindset you're looking for.

The Senior Bowl really did open up to Howard not looking as great as everyone thought. I certainly believe Gettleman was throwing smokescreen in his comments about Howard after reading this. If he doesn't show full effort, I don't think he'll be in consideration; especially with how unreliable he was.

Not a fan.

One thing's guaranteed every year, people gets pissed if you mock them TE, C, or OG's because they feel like you'll magically get that guy in the 2nd. OJ Howard is a top 15 pick and I wouldn't be angry with us taking him at #8. I honestly think his floor is #11 with the Saints.

If you understand college ball, you'll see that Howard doesn't play tough competition. I think he's far overrated, and I can see him slip again in the 2nd round.

Again, he is a decent prospect, but I don't think he has the highest ceiling from all the TEs.

This video explains where he needs to improve, but where he has potential.

He's not that bad of a prospect, but he's not the bests TE in the draft. He's probably top 3, but overhyped.

CBS has Howard going 22nd to the Dolphins while Njoku goes 16th to the Ravens.

NFL.com has him going 32nd to the Patriots in its latest mock draft.

SB Nation has him going to Atlanta at 31st.

ESPN has him going 23rd to the Giants.

Bleacher Report has him going 22nd to the Dolphins.

Nobody thus far has Howard going in the Top 15.

haha yes cause Mock drafts are so accurate
