How Does Wilks Get Shaq on the Field in 2017?

Recommended Posts

Admittedly watched only 4/5 full Panther games this past-season and didnt completely notice Shaq Thompson playing as small a percentage of snaps as he did this past season. The former first round pick is entering his third year and Wilks needs to get the young man on the field full-time. He makes quite a few plays that coaches would call "explosives" almost every game I watch whether it a big hit, special teams tackle, interception, or pass-break up. Does Wilks get creative and have packages for him to Blitz often? Split more reps with Thomas Davis? Hell, line him up at safety in rare occurrences? What does Wilks have to do schematically or deliberately to put Shaq in position for success?

What I expect is splitting reps with TD will be the main factor.

Last season, I was very slightly worried about the slight regression of one of my favorite Panther players ever, and it was full evident against Atlanta.

I'm not talking about technique regression. I'm talking about him physically.

He's not fast anymore.

You watch how we got beat by Atlanta the second game. You watch Thomas Davis, and you see why. Atlanta attacked us in the middle on our linebackers with their runningbacks all game. TD could flash out HoF coverage immediately on the spot, and he still would get beat.

He's not as fast as he used to be. He's still the physical, intelligent, tough player we all know and love. But he's lost a gear.

What will occur as a result of this? Shaq Thompson.

Expect Shaq to immediately come in and fill in TD's spot more often, especially against teams with speed. Shaq is real fast and good, and shouldn't have a problem filling in for TD. I still expect TD will play a good bit, it's just we'll be giving him more time to rest with him aging.

Shaq Thompson will help with the speed factor against teams that utilize it. There's no doubt that he'll be able to fill in nicely, and I expect him to be there. As much as I love TD, I'd honestly rather have speed to counter speed, and Shaq Thompson has that youthful speed.

I completely agree with this. Shaq needs to be on the field a lot more. Shaq can really be a big time playmaker on our defense. I'm also excited to see what Jeremy Cash can become next season. He played well on special teams.

This. I said on another thread recently that IMO this season we'll see the beginning of the passing of the torch from TD to Shaq.
